I was under the impression that silencers were illegal.  Are they? How silent are we talking about? How much dinero? Where do you get one?

Suppressors are legal in something like 35 states; I'm quite sure TX allows them. They will need to be registered with ATF and a $200 transfer or making tax paid.

Obviously, level of suppresssion varies with caliber and other factors, with .22lr being most quiet generally. 5.56 cans on a M4 can bring muzzle noise down to the level of a .22lr rifle.

Cost runs anywhere from $150 or so to over $1K

There are a good number of suppressor makers and dealers. Look on NFA sale board on the EE or on www.subguns.com to get you started.

In Texas, if you can legally own a firearm, you can own a suppressor. And suppressor is the correct term. The are not really silent. They are quite enough to shoot without hearing protection though.
We sell Gemtech suppressors here in Texas. If you buy direct from a dealer, you don't have to pay a transfer fee. (at least with a NICE dealer!)
You will need to get a letter signed by your cheif law enforcement officer or purchase through a corporation. You also pay $200 to Uncle Sam for the privilage. After a 3-4 month wait for your form 4 to be approved and you are good to go.
It's so simple I don't know why everyone does not do it!
