My M4 handguards seems to rotate bilaterally a few degrees. The delta ring is installed properly as is the handguard cap on the front sight assembly. This is true for all 6 or 7 of my AR's.

Has anybody figured out a solution to this "problem?"

Thanks, Fiddler

My particular solution was to buy the Sure-Fire M73 handguards, but for 7 weapons, that could get kind of expensive. Sorry I can't be of more (read as: any) help.

This was the same problem I was having with my new 6920. It was one of the more severe cases that at times when I went to grab the rifle I thought the rifle was slipping out of my hand from a bad grasp. It is very unnerving to think you're a butter fingers and dropping a $1,500 rifle onto the hard floor!

I shipped it to Colt November 26th, 2004 for repair. They sent me a note to say they received it on Dec 1, and to also inform me that they were closed for " Factory shutdown from Dec 17 to Jan 03, 2005". Surelly, I figured that they would see how simple a problem it was to fix, and send the rifle with a firm handguard back to me before the shutdown (right?) WRONG! I received the rifle last week February 14, 2005!!!!

THEY ARE BACKED UP SOLID DUE TO THEIR NEW FOUND WEALTH. And if the latest run of spotty finished rifles (at a $125 price increase to boot) is any indication of how they are trying to catch up to demand, then their service turn around time is still going to be loooooong.

If I had the same problem now, I would buy a Surfire M73 rail and call it a day.
OR,
I would have swapped out the handguard at the gun show for a replacement hanguard at $45

The dealer that was selling this stuff at the show (Model 1 Sales) was very knowledgable of the problem and willing to change it out for me on the spot, but I didn't have my rifle with me. That I can tell, the replacement handgurds looked of the same manufacture. I wouldn't doubt that  if I asked, he would have been willing t do an even swap out for me at less then $45. He knows a lot of guys could care less about a sloppy fitting hand guard and simply put my handguard on the table to be sold to somebody else. I've noticed this problem is common.

I have found that most of the rotation is a result of the little bumps inside the REAR of the HGs, where they fit over the notches in the toothed barrel nut, not fitting the teeth snugly. Solved the problem in my own M4gery by pulling the HGs, putting a dab of  JB WELD on each of the little bumps in the HGs, covering the nut area w/SARAN wrap, and reasssembling. Let it sit overnight, pulled the unit apart, pulled off the SARAN WRAP, and cleaned off a few traces of the JB that had gotten squeezed over.

Zilch movement ever since; and I've had the HGs off and on three or four times since I did the job

My Colt MT6601 has loose full length HG's too.  It is the only Colt I own that the HG's rotate slightly, but none the less it still bugs me.

Shamayim's advice was right there. I did the JB Weld process last night. Tonight, I pulled the handguards, removed the saran wrap, spent 30 seconds on cleaning up excess JB Weld, and reinstalled the handguards (using, BTW, the hand-guard removal tool sold by Sinclair - makes the job easy.)

The handguards are absolutely rock-solid now.

Thanks.

Hey, glad to be of help.  After all, that's what this site is all about

I had a Colt that had loose handguards.  Found out it was due to a loose barrel nut.

Both my 5 year old Bushmaster 20" A2 and new Colt 6920 have very loose hanguards. A good 1/4 rotation in either direction. I figured it was standard for AR's to have loose handguards. I've handled a few Bushmaster and RR's lately that were rock solid.Must just be luck of the draw. As for the Colt, it's getting a RAS II, so rotation will no longer be a concern.
