Is there anyway to determine whether or not a lower receiver is cast or forged?

If I called the manufacturer with the serial # could they find out?

One quick way to check is the manufacturer;s information on the lower - on my cast lowers this is raised rather than engraved into the metal

Forgings have a thick seam (1/4" or so) that is sometimes rough and/or pitted, where excess material was extruded out of the dies.  This is normally machined as smooth as possible, but some parts will have pits there.  And all internal contours and mating surfaces are machined, so light tooling marks are usually visible.  Many people assume that forgings, which are more expensive, much stronger,  and definitely preferred, should be "prettier", but that is often not the case.

A cast part has very thin seams (1/32"), and often has raised letters instead of concave, roll-stamped letters.  Many more of the details are put into the casting mold, so many fewer surfaces are machined.  For example, most of the mag well's inner surface is not usually machined.

If it's a DPMS then look for an F prefix in the serial number.

Safe to assume that an "F" in serial # means forged?  If it doesn't  have the "F" does it mean it is cast?
