I'm thinking about putting a floating handguard on my Carbine.  I'm wondering what the major drawbacks are.  For instance, that thing is not coming off easily.  I tend to take my AR into some dirty places and sometimes light rain.  Is there a way to wipe off the barrel underneath the handguard without having to take it off?  Also, is there any rifle maintenance that would require me to have to remove it?

Thanks.

On some models, such as the Troy MRF and the ARMS SIR you can remove the bottom rail to get at the barrel.

I just installed a Troy MRF-C on my carbine and couldn't be happier.  The lower rail comes off as mentioned in the last post and it'll be easy to clean around the barrel area with a rag, brush, and some compressed air.  I don't know about the solid free-floaters like the DD or LaRue.
