I have a 1977/78 Colt SP1 I recently picked up.
My question is this: What type of a front pin should it have ? The one thats on it looks aftermarket. As best as I can remember the front was a slotted screw type not the ball detent slide out type.
Excuse my terminology of these parts. Mine has the slide out type.
Whats up?

I am assuming you are talking about the front large hole (.312" dia.) takedown pin that mates the upper and lower receivers.  The original should be the two slotted screws.  Keep an eye out in the EE forum as they do pop up for sale every now and then.  What you have sounds like an aftermarket push-pin style meant to facilitate quick takedown.  I have tried those in the past.  They are okay, but you run the risk of misplacing this item.  Nothing beats the original small push pin found in every aftermarket preban/no-ban.

My PD has several Colt SP1s. All of the front site have the push-pin set-up. These are as purchased and have not been altered. They were bought back in the 70's and have been the same ever since. I'm trying to talk them into letting me replace the uppers with 16" carbines. I'll have more luck trying to learn gopher dentistry. CHANGE BAD.

My blue label Colt HBARs originally had the two screw setup, but I changed them to a pushpin.

New:

It's always prudent to keep a few spares onhand-lower left side of the bin:

He is asking about the pivot pin, not the front sight.  All SP1's have the double screw set up.
