This may be a dumb question, but does the presence of a muzzle brake or flash hider have any affect on the reliability of a gas system?  I have heard mention of NFA short barrels (10-12") being finicky and wonder if this holds true for the same barrel/gas tube setup made for the general public with a typical 5.5" brake or hider.  I'm asking because I am considering removing the 5.5" brake of my factory Bushmaster and going with an A2 hider in legal SBR configuration.  Could this pose a problem with functioning?

In 16 - 24 " barrels, I know that a muzzle brake/comp has no effect on gas system operation.

I would expect the same to be true for 10-11" uppers, but I haven't tested it myseld.

i believe that the russian designed ak74/u muzzle brakes have some affect on gas system functioning....the semi closed chamber of the true ak74 brake and the "krinkov" brake are said to preserve gas pressure somewhat in the system even after the bullet leaves the barrel and thus keep some gas exerted force on the piston to continue the bolt unlocking.....ive never tested it, but seems that its theoretically possible......open ended muzzle devices like the xm177 replica prolly wont affect gas system operation if the above theory is correct, since its open ended.....so removing your 5.5 fs prolly wont affect the ar rifle's functioning......

No, the barrels are all the same, as far as the Bushy goes.

In my 11" upper it has some affects when you remove break from the barrel.
Previously my 11" upper had some short stroke problems but when I installed AK-type break on it most of the problems dissapeared. Just occasionally short stroking. With Miculek break it was hell to shoot. Too much pressure to my ears, needed double ear protection. Short stroking even more with Miculek break.

Eventually I made the gashole little larger and all my troubles faded away.
Installed also H buffer and HD spring for extractor.
