I thought there was a thread awhile back on removing Bushmaster's muzzle brakes? Anyone got a link or instructions?

If you have a 14.5" barrel, it must be professionally removed because it is soldered/welded on to the threads. If you have a 16" barrel, tap out the tapered pin and shoot it a few times until the brake flies off. There are no threads.

Just how safe is this?

I have a bushy 14.5 with the AK brake on it. Is it really worth the trouble and expense to have it removed? When the ban dropped, I was all gung ho about getting a vortex and building out a new rifle. But the more i think about it, I am not sure.

Any one have an opinion (haha) on the cost/benefit comparision of the AK brake vs. other flash hiders?

I owned a BM with the AK brake and shot next to 1/2 a dozen folks with the AK BM brake. They SUCK and I hate them.

Yeah, I have found that most of the side port brakes are nasty to shoot next to.

I know that flash can be controlled with ammo selection these days, just wondering if anyone rated these for reducing flash signature since it was a military design.

For what it will cost to cut it off and replace it I could probably buy a new barrel and bolt and have then installed.

Metro,

The 2 BM ak brakes I shot with at a night carbine class did have some considerable muzzle flash. While it wasn't as bad as the guy using a 10.5" barrel and A2 FH, it was a good size flash. I don't think the AK-74 brake was designed to reduce muzzle flash. I think it was designed to reduce muzzle climb on full-auto AK-74's.
