Inspired by the various comments on here and from the IM's and emails I have had on the URXII.

I wrote short review prior but it seems to have disappeared from the board.

Now I am not an engineer, but a simple light infanteer with delusions of grandeur.  ( Chief Mike H [who now works for Remington] remarked at SHOT that I am a scammer just like him).  A buddy of mine who is a techy looked at the URX both at SHOT and the one we have here, and was remarkably impressed with the machining and the consistencey of the dimensions.

I have used the upper in several shooting competitions - with the exception of one problem it has been flawless (the gas key was improperly staked on the LMT Bolt and the weapon became a bolt action during a 500m delibertaed fire match).

The Armalite midlength dimension is not perfect thought, (as Coldblue remarked in a prior thread) the gas port could be shifted back a 1/8" or the bbl exteneded 1/8" and the bayonet and other attachments might fit a little bit better.

The URXII is entirely M1913 compliant - top, sides and bottom rails.

The lower rail is removeable by hex nut - the orignals were a push buttom which was replaced for durability issues.  The M203A1 can be attached either conventionally (on the M4A1) or via a FF adaptor bracket.

Other than I am now banned from using it at work I am extremely happy with it.

As some here have percieved over the last several years of my posting on ARF I am a bit of a collector and connoisseur of fine rifle and carbines.

All my rifles pretty much sit and collect dust of the last year while the URX gets used.

#1 thanks for all the info you post here, it is very much appreciated.

It was considered that I had made a modification to the weapon.  Our current participation in Afghanistan is not combat duty but AS_IF - sorry ISAF a Peace Support Operation, and our ROE and equiptment get microscoped when we shoot.

So this system is in fact free floating, and compares to the Troy Industries MRFC with the exception this rail is to Picatinny specs?

Thanx.

While I do not know about the comparison of the two rail systems, I do know that the URX II is indeed free floating.

I guess I would be the techy guy that Kevin was talking about, and he is right, I am amazed at the consistincy of the machining on that piece of kit.

When you look @ the time involved in machining te URX II, and the precision that it is machined to, (precision and surface finish cost money BTW) 359 dollars is a steal.

I belive the big differences between the URX II, and the MRF, is that the MRF is user installable and that the URX is lighter.

there are many differences.

#1 the MRF clamps down AROUND the original barrel nut.  the URX2 IS the barrel nut.  the urx2 screws DIRECTLY to the upper receiver threads, then is backed off to align the upper rail of the URX with the upper rail of the receiver and is held in place with a jam nut.

here, i am just gonna cut and paste what MSTN says

THE URX II DOES INDEED "SCREW ON" TO THE UPPER RECEIVER ALL THE WAY, AND THEN BACKED OFF AS NECESSARY TO PLACE ITS TOP RAIL IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE UPPER RECEIVER'S. THE URX II IS THEN HELD PARALLEL TO THE UPPER RECEIVER BY A PAIR OF SPECIAL FIXTURES WHILE A NUT IS INSTALLED OVER THE BARREL AND TORQUED DOWN WITH, YOU GUESSED IT, A SPECIAL TOOL, LOCKING THE URX IN PLACE. THIS IS FAR, FAR SIMPLER THAN ANY OTHER FOREND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE, AS THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO "TIME" THE BARREL NUT. PLUS, WITH THE URX II, THERE WILL BE NO TORQUE SETTINGS ALL OVER THE PLACE, FROM 30 FT-LB TO 80 FT-LB. BUT, IT REQUIRES COMPONENTS WITH NEAR PERFECT TOLERANCES, WHICH KNIGHT'S IS QUITE CAPABLE OF DOING. WE ONLY INSTALL BARREL NUTS BETWEEN 35 AND 50 FT-LB ON TRADITIONAL RECEIVERS WITH FREE FLOATING FORENDS, BECAUSE I SIMPLY FEEL MORE THAN THAT IS JUST TOO MUCH.

#2 the URX2 lower section is held in place with 4 screws (this is what coldblue said).    the MRF lower does not use screws, it is held in place with a nipple.

there are probably others

have a good one.

mattltd, Stainless, Thank you.

I am curious to know how one would install this firearm?

I am still cranky about HK not producing their HKM4 for the public, or rumor has it not at all.

Thanx.

Sammy,

URX is a factory or authorized installer (i.e. MSTN) instalation - as you need a special barrel nut wrench and a alignment bar.

How do you rate it against the LMT MRP?

Well I have a MRP in my closet ...
They are similar but different setups.  For me the MRP is not the 95% solution, it does not have features that I require in an upper.  The MRP's greatest feature is the user easily changed barrel.

I think some users may be better served by the MRP, just not me.

What kind of flip up front sight is that?

That is the new KAC flip-up front site/gas block with bayo lug.

Not availible anywhere but on a KAC factory rifle.

I found another continuous rail that has not been debated upon - at least that I have seen; the Les Baer Four-Position Free Floating handguard. Do you know anything about this and how it would compare against the Knights URX?
