| With so many of it in the market. How do you tell which one is a good "forged" flat top upper receiver? They all looks the same and some gunshops sort of mixed them up w/ other brands, that they too have problems identifying which is which. And why do some have the mark of the forging house on the right side, while most of it doesn't? was it removed during the machining process? Will a bad upper cause a KB? |

I have purchased several flat top upper receivers and have been burned a few times. One upper was sold as an FN receiver, but when I got it, it was out of spec and not machined correctly. The rail height was too high, and the ejection port cover I installed fit loosely in the port. Lesson: If they say it's made by FN, stay away. On another upper, I was told it was Bushmaster. Everything was in spec and it even had nice RAS numbers machined in the rail. When I asked BM about it, they said their receivers don't have the RAS numbers. Lesson: If they say it's Bushmaster, don't always believe them. If you have you're heart set on a certain brand, I would buy directly from the manufacturer. Otherwise, get a Rock River Arms upper from one of the vendors on the EE. These seem to be the best value these days. |
