I'm thinking about building myself a "cheap" SPR for now until I can afford one of Wes' inventions. Anyway, I'm a bit curious how you guys think my rifle would look... Here 'tis: Standard Bushy/RRA/whatever flattop 20" Colt HBAR 1/7 cut down to 18", recrowned and rethreaded Barrel coated with desert tan duracoat or something similar Daniel Defense tube CLE gas tap Dark Parts desert tan grip panels Vltor Clubfoot Carbine Modstock (desert tan) I haven't decided on the hand grip or the muzzle device. Anyway...thoughts? |

The SPR grip can be seen here on my AR10... It's a beefy son of a bitch... http://home.bak.rr.com/varmintcong/ar10/ar10a4.html Great for larger handed folks, fits very well. Only downside is they don't make a left handed version, great for right handed folks but not so great for lefties. As for handguards on these SPR rifles, I think I would favor the ARMS SIR but that's my own personal preference over the other types. I really want that long continous rail along with the freefloating effects. My AR10 will likely be the rifle that is whipped into a bit of an SPR type configuration, just waiting for the rifle length ARMS SIR unit to be released. If the AW ban sunsets I'll probably throw a Magpul collapsable stock on it. |
| Well do you already have the barrel? Because a Colt barrel and custom profile wont be cheap. It may not be much more for a custom stainless barrel. What optics are you considering? You if its a Leupold the 40 is a tad tall but you could use the new 40L. Also why dont you like the KAC grips panels? They fit on the PRI tube. You have an IM. |

DevL has a point on the barrel... If you already own it, you'll spend $125 - 150 to cut, thread and turn it down (if you want it lighter, which I would [;)]. If you have to buy it for $150 or so, you are in it for more than the cost of a SS Douglas from CLE. The concept sounds good on the whole. Now get on with it and post pics [:)]. |

I have the barrel already. I've had it for quite some time just for the purpose of cutting it down. I've just never gotten around to it. I haven't thought as far ahead as optics yet. Right now, I just want to get it together far enough that I can shoot with irons or with the ACOG or ML2 I already have. I don't dislike the KAC panels, I just like the dark parts better (looks-wise). I'll look at the Troy sight as well. |

I know you said you have the bbl, but ADCO has an "SPR-ish" barrel, Stainless, air gauged, 18", 1:7, SPR-ish profile, by White Oak Precision for only $250. Wouldn't selling the bbl and buying one of these be more financially prudent than spending all those $$$ on having it cut and profiled? Either way, sounds like a winner. |
