I have a Rock River Arms post-ban M4-style barrel with the "pressed on" fake flash hider. Like many of you, I've been thinking about having the barrel threaded and adding a flash hider when it becomes legal to do so. I can't really tell how the faux hider is attached, but I'd imagine it might be soldered on, not just press-fitted, so it might take more than just a big wrench to remove it. I also don't know if there's anything else that should be done along with that (recrown, maybe)? I can get a Vortex G6 from Brownell's at a good price with my C&R discount. As I understand it, there's not a requirement for any kind of washer system to keep it in place, so I should be able to just screw it onto a threaded barrel myself. Is this kosher, or should I bring the part I want installed to the smith? Or let them order it themselves? Finally, I'm curious if anyone has gotten estimates for what this kind of operation will run? I have no idea what gunsmiths charge, and I don't want to get treated like a guy who has no idea what gunsmiths charge by a gunsmith, if you get my drift. |

I believe the matarial that needed to be removed for the press on FFS negates the ability to thread the barrel even if you got the attachemnt off. You'd have to cut it, but then you would have to permanently install the flash suppressor in order to get it back to a legal length. The best places to ask about this service would be: Kurt's Kustom ADCO K2 They would be the best people to talk to about what can be done and give you a price quote. Good luck. |

Quoted: I believe the matarial that needed to be removed for the press on FFS negates the ability to thread the barrel even if you got the attachemnt off. It turns out, at least based on one example, that this isn't true. Someone recently had their faux FF removed, and the remaining stub was more than 1/2" in diameter, so there was plenty of material to turn down and thread. BUT... the stub was also a couple tenths of an inch longer than you want/need for a FS, so something would need to be done about that, either cutting the extra bit of barrel off, or adding a collar to set the FS against. Regardless, this is all gunsmith/machinist work, not something you're going to be able to do at home with hand tools. -Troy |

Hi Terrato, I recently did just what you're proposing. I don't know if RRA has differing methods of attaching that "thing" to our muzzles, but on mine it was just pressed on, but down towards the base, the barrel had been knurled (not sure if this the correct term, as the marks run only along the lognitudinal (sp) axis of the barrel). It was fairly easy to press off, but you probably wouldn't have any luck trying to turn it. After that you'll still need to remove quite a bit of material before you thread it. As said earlier, you'll need to cut/crown it unless you want your barrel to grow an extra 1"-2", not to mention getting rid of the ugly knurling. Also worth noting, is as I understand it (I'm not an attorney) threading is OK so long as your new brake/comp is "permanently attached". Worth looking up. Have fun Stych |
