Been seeing ads for M16 bayonets of differing vintage - M4, M7, M9

Can anyone explain the differences ?

Thanks

M7 and M9 fit M-16's (AR15's), I dont know about the M4 though.  I think it may be for the M1 rifle or carbine.  M7 is the basic M-16 bayonet, the M9 is the multi-purpose one that also fits an M-16.

Thanks; seems to be a big price difference between the two.

The M4 bayonet fits the Korean War vintage M1 Carbine.  WW2 M1 Carbine has no means to mount one.

M6 fits the M14 in case anyone is interested.

The M7 is the M16 version of the same bayonet design that's been used since WWII.

The M9 is the current bayonet, and has gone through a few minor revisions.  They have been made by Buck and Phrobis, with the largest contractor being Lan-Cay, who currently shares the current contract with Ontario.

The M7 is a better bayonet, while the *better* M9s are probably the better field knives.  The quality definitely dropped when Lan-Cay won the contract, though.

Thanks Troy, great info. The pics show why the M9 costs so much more.

I was looking for one to put on my 590A1, so a cheapo M7 should suffice for that job. M9 sure does look nice though :-)

I just got a catalog in the mail from Brigade Quartermasters, and on the back cover is a bayonet made by Ontario Knife Co. It has an 8-inch blade with a small section of serration at the rear of the edge. The handle is a single piece of OD polymer in the shape of the handles on their Spec-Plus series knives. I wouldn't mind checking one of them out, but they're $120.

I've seen them for around $90 in several places, just can't remember where right now

The M9 is a really big bayonet (blade is about 1/4inch thick), if you want the superior product get the M7, it is a better bayonet and a better combat knife in my opinion.

They were doing more bayonet combat in WWI and WWII and that (M-7 style) design was tops then, we barely use bayos at all anymore, and now we have a knife so large that I think it might be hard to get it through ribs.

No need.  It's funny but I just finished putting together my preban Bushy M4 and was looking at different Bayonets when I saw your thread.  I think I'll be getting the M7 one myself.  I have one other catalog that I need to find.  It had surplus stuff, and I remember seeing 3 or 4 different types for the M16/AR15.  If I do find it I'll let you know.

RGuns and CDNN are advertising M7s at $20-$30 depending upon condition. CDNN claim German manufacture (for Colt) on some of theirs.

Those Solingen, Germany-made M7s are looked down upon by Colt collectors because they aren't US-made, but the dirty little secret is that the German ones are much higher quality.  They just aren't as rare (at this time) as a new, US-made, Colt-stamped M7 is.

Heck I gave mine away!  Of course it was a green Phrobis, not the tan. I like the M7s much better for actual bayonnet work.

BOC = Bauer Ordnance Corporation, one of several M7 contractors.

So, anyone using the Colt Advanced Multipurpose Bayonet? (Sorry, can't remember it's anacronym or name)

The M4 Carbine looks like it's probably a better firearm than a spear. :)

I'll probably pick up the M9 because it does look like a better field knife for hunting, and I guess it's just a bonus that it also fits on the end of my hunting rifle.
