Hi all, I just acquired a pre ban Colt A-1 upper and also a new Bushy lower (post ban).  While I'd prefer not to have a compensator due to the noise, am considering using the DPMS Levang Linear model.  Does it increase noise levels substantially?  Will I need a barrel vice to remove the flashhider?  Am reluctant to silver solder a comp on due to the fear of overheating the barrel. Are the barrel and comp soft enough that they can be drilled for a blind pin with a small drill press and high speed bits? I have a wire feed welder to weld the pin in.

Thanks in advance,

I've never needed to use a vise to remove a factory flash suppressor - so you probably won't need one either.

The barrel can be worked with HSS - it's 4150 at about RC35-38, so no big deal.

You need to remove the bayonet lug and the collapsible stock if you have one. If you remove the flash hider and don't replace it with a comp of some kind, then you'll have to remove the barrel threads.

You shouldn't need a vice to remove the flash hider, just the correct tool. Any device put on a threaded barrel will have to be permanently atatched.

Thanks for ther replies, Guys!  I'd prefer a plain barrel like my Bushmasters but the cost of having the barrel cut and crowned or having it turned to remove the threads far exceed the cost of a comp. I briefly had a Bushy AK Shorty and shooting it without hearing protection was NOT pleasant.  Any experience with the Levang Comp?

Why not use Kurt's "Fake Flash Suppressor"?
It looks similar to the A-2 FS but without the noise. Can anybody advise what size wrench is used to remove/install these?
Thanks, Seth

The "wrench" I used to remove my flash hider, and install a fake one was wrap a rag around the device (about 1/8" thick) the use vice grips over the rag, not too tight, just tight enough to not slip when turned. Worked like a champ. As long as your careful to use the rag and not alot of pressure it shoul\d work out fine. Mine has no scratches or bending.

Here's a picture of my Bushmaster Post Ban. It was a 16" HBAR. He turned the barrel to an M4 profile and added his brake. If you have a preban threaded barrel, he can put his brake on for a song. I'd hit him up. He did a great job on mine, and their is no noise problem with this brake.
