@kbi it’s a Franken build. Faxon .223 wylde 20in heavy profile with fluting which has been a great barrel and cools off quickly, FCD single port keymo muzzle break, BCM gas block, spike nitrided gas tube, BCM KMR handguard, just put a GG&G bipod on it, SOLGW BCG, surplus FN upper I had laying around, and a radian charging handle

I wanted a fluted 20” barrel with a quad rail, so that kind of limited my factory built options. I was able to get the rail on sale and the Faxon was on sale for less than $200. If I was going to buy a factory built upper then I would go with BCM or SOLGW

Received my RRH Recce IARv1 a couple of weeks back and finally got it all assembled. Need to decide on a SS or FRT.  Also hoping a better solution for the bipod comes along. Not super thrilled by the Atlas I have put on here for now. I was considering a surplus RPK bipod but I don't think there's enough room between the gas block adjuster and the QD muzzle device. Put my ancient stainless steel YHM .30 Phantom on here because it can handle a higher ROF being SS. Heavy as hell for a suppressor though.

If you are talking about the Klein bipod, it requires machining the barrel down to the correct dimensions to accept the bipod mounting system.

What is the philosophy on optics for these rifles? I’ve seen a lot of people using ACOGs.

I’m putting one together and am divided between an ACOG and a red dot/magnifier.

Thanks.

Ideally an LSW is a squad/team based weapon. Using it as such, it should be used to perform functions better served with an LSW, than a regular rifle.

One of those things is difference is target prioritization. In my view, magnification is going to allow you to identify specific types of targets, which you should be prioritizing….. as apposed to say…… the closest threat, which might be the priority of a rifleman,

The LSW should also been seen as an assaulting weapon, unlike a heavier machine gun often relegated to supporting fires. This is a point vastly lost of most of the content creators which seem to be showing LSWs simply fulfilling machine gun rolls, which they cant do.

These bitches are already kinda heavy, so I would say whatever gets you there without adding a ton of weight.

Some folks have been working for about five years on developing a doctrine, written in a field manual format. Some smart people. I am not sure if that will be published freely or contained to the domain for which it is intended. Should know by this fall.

You aren't lying. 12lbs empty is not objectively heavy, but when it's a rifle, it's heavy. And that's what these are: they are not crew served weapons, but are expected to keep up with the rifles.

I might have been better off with the 20", but the 24" called-out to me. Right now it wears an AP PRO + mag, but may end-up with a PA 3x SLx.

That's not mention that the expectation is a rifle like this is going to be putting out a higher volume of rounds and you'll have to carry that ammo with you, and its not nothing to carry another 240 rounds in mags.

I think keeping the PRO and adding a magnifier would be a good setup.  4x and 6x magnifiers would be a good go to.

While generally not a fan of LPVO's, I think this type of rifle is the perfect use case for one.

IMHO, the 3x micro slx is very good to go. I have seen them swam across rivers, been outside in days that went from 50*-10*, knock around…….. have not seen a problem yet. They must have water proofed those turrets well and purged them adequately. Have not seen the issues like other budget options, at least the two units I have been around.

I like my Elcan M145 for my Colt 950. The FOV is great and the ranging reticle is very useful since you are not going to have time to adjust knobs all the time. I know its an old school optics now but it still works for me and it holds zero just fine. I actually picked up another one of the ex military ones for $300 and rehabbed it for less than $20.

Article I wrote on how to rehab the Elcan M145: https://john1911.com/expensive-optics-cheap/

Rehabbed Elcan M145:

I agree on optics, I really considered a simple red dot on mine, but magnification is such a huge force multiplier.

Mine's 18", so we save a bit of weight, but I'm considering a smaller, lighter prism type optic.

Currently has a 1-6x LPVO, used to great effect.  I may just leave it alone.

But yes, for this role some kind of magnified optic is ideal.

You did, indeed. Hello, fellow Michigander.

Upper is a Klein Machining 24" with RPK bipod, and I just swapped the handguard he uses with a 15" PRI GenIII. I was inspired by another gentleman on IG, so cannot take credit, but he wasn't wrong. The handguard works great with the bipod, and the carbon fiber and extra length should be good to reduce handling issues when she warms up.

From the old thread, 200 round SAW pouch, it can carry eight 30 round magazines, with one flat along the bottom.

Its easy to place that to your front left, open it, and reload without having to do that rock back and forth to expose a mag on your body, or shift around hunting for a mag.  Its also super easy and cheap to make up a few of those and spread load them.  Lastly, its nice not to have to put together an entire LBE kit, $$$, for yet another thing.

Rifle or upper with a quality 16-18" heavy barrel, free float rail, and adjustable gas block.

I want to have a rifle per this thread's topic but not with a 20+ inch barrel due to added suppressor length.

You didn't specify that you had a budget, but I have to think that you have a limitation, given that Red Right Hand makes exactly what you want.

Outside of that, you can use a nitrided barrel if you want. You can use anything you want. It just may not be ideal, but it doesn't mean you, yourself, will ever know the difference.

No budget.

Their IAR is a 14.5. I don't really want to pin and weld as they want you to. Especially since they don't have the YHM QD comps.

It looks like you can do the customizable Recce LMG and have the barrel cut down to 18" though so that may work. 6-12 week lead time. I'll have to think about it.
