| When I deployed to Iraq in 2003, I was initially issued a new-in-the-box M4 carbine with an N stock, standard "fat' double shielded handguards, no optics, no RAS, no PAQs, No M68 CCO, no nothing. Since the depot didn't have any of the KAC mounts for the M203s, the squad leaders ended up carrying their M16A2 with the '203s. Then when we crossed Navistar into Iraq, I traded my M4 for the M249 SAW, since I was already assigned to be the Mk19 gunner in my vehicle. I got really good with the SAW... I mean REALLY good with it. A lot of the active-duty guys had the M4s with the RAS, waffle stocks, PEQs and the old Surefire lights on them. |

From Special OPS magazine Vol.37. The upper of the near carbine is unusual in that it has a 16" M4 barrel, 4-rail gas block with what may be a folding front sight, railed free-float carbine length handguards, Harris bipod, and a Redi-Mag. The grip looks like it's got a wrap. The photo is captioned as early 2005. anyone know anything more about this setup? |

Pretty unusual to see a 145 on a rifle, especially one under 20" The Canadians use a different reticle in their C79 ETA: Not that it can't be used on a rifle, I have one on a 20", but the reticle is optimized for a MG and area fire. |

I posted this picture in another thread but I think it belongs here. It is a picture of me in 2005 south west of Taji Iraq with a M16A2 that has an IR laser and an ACOG mounted on the carry handle. I didn't like the ACOG mounted on the handle and what I really wanted was a M16A4, but I was in an advanced short range marksmanship class taught by the Army shooting team (a lot of reflexive fire) and found out I was very fast with the optic mounted that high. Kind of like the way people are putting red dots on high mounts these days.
