This is the only one I have finished at this point.  Brownells slickside upper, 12.7" barrel, faux moderator/grenade ring, chrome BCG w/o FA serrations.  Pin and weld on the barrel/moderator by JT.  Nodak grey charging handle.  Fulton Armory "607" handguards and sight components.  It will be going on a Brownells partial fence lower with AR15sport LPK, Brownells 2-position buffer tube, and Tony's Customs aluminum stock.

I have most, if not all, of the parts for a 733-ish C7 upper w/11.5", and 723-ish A2 upper w/14.5".  Have to find time to send the 14.5 off to JT, and it's gonna have to get a lot damn warmer in my garage before I try to put the 11.5 together...

Got the rings back on, and decided against cutting for now so I had it P/W. Dropped it off yesterday afternoon, picked up this AM.

Finished my second AR build with some crucial help from HDLS last weekend, and it's a carry handle build.  In its CA configuration, this will be my go-to for home defense, truck use, etc. within CA.

Got the ADCO NT4 spacer on, very nice. Will be receiving a pin and weld this weekend me thinks. Depends on if I take the jeep out, IDK.

I would use shims instead of a crush washer with that spacer. Can’t see having much threads left with that setup.

I've seen it done both ways, and i shared your concern until i started test fitting.
Theres roughly .250 worth of threads in current set up, possibly more due to the 1/4ish turn to level out the flash hider.
This barely made it over 16in. I believe shims would be less than 16in.

I think the A1/C7/723/727 with a KAC RIS/RAS is the handiest little carbine combination. Slap an Aimpoint 3/5/7/9000 or even a CompX or PRO on top and it's golden. Not the prettiest or most Gucci, but it's usefulness shines through.

Great looking old school carbine!

BTW, how high is the Aimpoint when mounted on the carry handle like that?  Is it quite bit higher the 1.93" flat top mounts?

No one has ever made one with A1 style sights that I know of.  However, Colt did make some receivers with A2 sights with the case deflector and no forward-assist a long time ago for their AR-15 SAW (I forget what it's actually called), which being open-bolt, did not require a FA.  I don't think anyone else has ever made such a thing.  I'd go for it if someone made it, with either type of sights.  They'd be my go-to for non-clone carry handle builds.

A1 or A2 sights makes no difference to me, but I'd actually prefer the A2 sights. Realistically, based on price, I'll probably end up with a slick-side w/A1 sights and that's okay.

There's an LMG upper on Gunbroker but that's too much scratch for the itch I have.

Brownells has blemished slick side carry handle uppers on sale for $99 and I almost bought one but they have have wonky carry handles.

These blemished lowers exhibit a slightly offset sight channel.  Iron sights will install and zero, but will need slight adjustment to one side.

For a shorter carbine, I'd want A1, for something longer, A2.  I recall seeing an older topic where folks mentioned seeing stripped uppers of this type at gun shows back in the day.

I just finished a build that I posted above but will post again below which has a slickside upper.  Got the upper from Fulton Armory about three months ago. The upper with the rear sight assembly installed (IIRC, the site said the rear sights were USGI/surplus) cost me $180.  Theirs come in black instead of grey.  Shipping was decent (I ordered a bunch of other parts from them for this build, and shipping was $15 for everything).  M4 feed ramps were an option and mine looks to have been forged by Anchor Harvey.

I prefer my uppers with no FA in general, whether flat top or carry handle.  I'd only do a FA if it could be incorporated into the charging handle like on the later-production AI AR-10s.  I'm not a fan of the big protrusion on the side.

I know someone left-handed who'd love an A1 CH upper with no FA, but with a case deflector.  He said when he was in the Marines they actually gave him a detachable case deflector that mounted to the carry handle.

Nice rifle. Generally the FA doesn't bug me but sometimes I get an idea in my head for a build and this idea looks better w/o a forward assist. Now that I've been hunting stripped uppers the no deflector is looking more and more attractive as well.

The M4 feed ramps interest me, I'll have to reach out to Fulton Armory since I don't see any stripped uppers on their website. I'm going to have a pin and weld for this build so I was thinking I'd just find a place that can cut M4 feed ramps and do the P&W.

Thanks.  I'm eager to shoot it (once I can find some 5.56mm ammo).

Finding areas to reduce weight, the aesthetics of it, and the fact that I dislike the protrusion are the main reasons I wanted to go with no-FA.  The lack of a FA also makes replacing the ejection port cover much easier on a fully assembled upper.

I just checked out FA's site myself.  Seems like they may be sold out.  They only have that upper available as a complete 20" 604/M-16 assembly.

Not sure if Nodak has anything.

@bigstick61

Since I wanted a real bayo mount, and the 'gov't' profile barrels all neck down under gas block diameter behind the fsb shoulder, I took a 14.5" heavy barrel, turned the diameter down to gas block diameter going back far enough to add a full-length-bayo mount (about 2 inches.) This barrel already had taper pins for the original FSB so I knew I didn't need the shoulder for anything.

Then I cut the barrel down to 11.5" and threaded it, like stock.

Then, I took a old used FSB, and amputated the bayo lug with barrel ring, off of it. The FSB mated to this barrel already had the bay lug milled off so off went the sling mount, too.

I slid the new 'bayo mount' up the barrel, located it, drilled and taper-pinned it, and then reinstalled the retainer ring and handguards after cutting clearance in them for the bayonet. The lug makes it hard to get a finger in there where it's hot, anyway, and the opening is actually pretty minimal. I did have to use a full-circle handguard retainer.

If that doesn't make sense, I can pop the hand guards off and take some more pics. I still need to re-park it.

I'm debating using an A2 upper to make this retro build. I would like to put a sling ring somewhere up front. I might pirate one off an FAL or similar and just cock it to one side inside the FSB, I'm not sure yet. I'd want it to look 'factory'. I don't want the barrel to have any thin sections though. Gotta be rigid for maximum stab.

I'd be interested in a closer look, for sure.

653ish clone I just finished. First rifle I got issued from Uncle Sam after I was done with the training pipeline.

Carrying handles will always have a place in my heart. Lol!

Note the dual bolts on the TA31, I thought that was so trick.
An early mod few knew about.
An old AK brake Bushy, the brake was the first thing I took off.
