Ok  If I turn off the gas then the bolt will not open when fired which just makes the rifle a single shot straight pull action, Correct ???
will the bolt withstand the force of firing the gun. or would you need a beefier bolt system ??
the charge handle will turn and unlock the bolt when pulled Correct ???

Correct on all counts.  Bolt is fine. Bolt-action operation is probably less stressful than semi-auto.

Why do you ask?

Correct. No gas into the gas tube = bolt action AR. With the charging handle being the bolt's action. Wouldn't be any need for a beefier bolt that I can think of either.

been thinking bout building a side charge gun and the thought of a straight pull single shot gun might come in handy for the grandkids to learn with.
and just a little curious about the workings of the gun in general, local guys around here couldn't give any trustworthy advice,
Thanks for  the input

do you think the fact that the bolt stays put and you have no loss of gas
would it increase the velocities much??

I'm sure it would. Especially if the barrel had no gas port drilled at all, or the barrels gas port was blocked with a solid portion of gas block. (Or would that be called a no-gas block?)

No, the increase would be relatively minor.  ~ 30 fps if I remember correctly.

My LMT has an "off" switch on the gas block (for use with a can)...don't notice any difference in operation between on and off...except that it's quieter.

I shoot mine with a can.  why would you need to shut off the gas when you use a can??

For extra quiet shots since the bolt doesn't move you don't have all the noise from the parts of the action cycling.

OP just try firing blanks without a blank apdapter  it is the same thing.

aren't there some bolt action AR-15's in the UK?

In the uk i think they call them a straight pull instead of bolt action

I see why he might think the bolt would be under more stress.
When fired normally the gas holds the bolt forward until it's fully unlocked. The lugs never touch the lugs on the receiver extension. When you pull it back with the charging handle it unlocks when the bolt can't come back anymore because it's stopped by the receiver extension.

The question has been answered by the full or external piston guns since they do the same action, but much more violently than you will by hand.
So you'll be fine.

I remember someone posting something to the effect of:  They were at the range and shooting steel and the AR's wouldn't damage it.  Bolt gun .223, zipped on through.  I don't recall the details, like barrel length of either gun etc etc.  But having no gas bleeding off might raise the velocity / power some.

They should've heated the ammo for the semi.

Molon recorded about 25fps.

Just some food for thought.. If you're building from new parts and you get a bolt/barrel interface that is of tight tolerance you may have some trouble at first getting the bolt to unlock. I forgot my hex key for the adjustable gas block on my new build the first time out and the block was all the way shut. It was a rough 50 rounds and I had to pry the BCG back at first. POF makes a bolt gun in the AR styling.

The part in red is not true. In the Stoner system, gas does push the bolt forward during the unlocking of the bolt, but that doesn't happen until well after the  bullet has left the barrel. The bolt locking lugs are definitely in contact with the barrel extension during the launch of the bullet.
