Building a quasi clone of an xm177e2 with a 12.5" barrel and pin/weld the griffin comp on the end.

thinking that the 12.5 from ballistic advantage with their option for barrel nut/delta ring assembly and pinned FSB is my best bet

any other options I should look at in the sub- $300 range?

Check out Faxon Firearms barrels.  They've got some great stuff and excellent customer service.

its nice but mid length handguards are a no-go for a clone. good to know they have this though.

I think BA and DD are the only people to offer a govt profile 12.5 carbine length FSB barrel

The XM177E2 had a pencil profile 1/12 11.5" barrel originally. The closest thing that you will get to make a non-NFA XM177E2 is the Brownells 12.7" A1 CARBINE BARREL 1-12 ASSEMBLY.

Here.

Of course, since you are going to built a quasi-clone, it does not make much difference.
