For my next build of a 6.5G marksman AR, im considering a side charging upper. I dont care for the awkward action of a standard charging handle under a scope. Problem is ive never handled a side charger before. Anyone have any advice or experience with them that couple help me to choose to use one or not, and the brand to purchase. Or maybe there is an article somewhere that could help. Id love to see an experts opinion of each brand after using each of them. Maybe they all are trash. I just dont know.
Thanks in advance. |

This is my 6.5 G its a LAR side charging upper with a young bolt carrier. I have a hard time with the side charging upper because of the muscle memory of standard charging handles.
Honestly i dont see them being anymore better at what they do than a standard charging handle set up. if you look at the price of the side charger versus that of a standard setup. I paid 300 for mine at a local gun shop and i thouroughly regret it. Does it look cool? damn right it does but the knob comes loose occasionally and i try to rack it like a regular rifle at times. if i had it to do all over again i would have used the money i spent on the upper and put that towards a better optic. I built my first AR with a Crosshill reciprocating right side charge. Reasoning, I've never used ARs but have many shotguns and hunting rifles with the same setup. So for me it was like just more natural.
Now I want to build a pistol with a left side charge non reciprocating handle. I think I like the Matrix design where it doesn't extend behind the receiver in operation but I've never handled one so ymmv. Roush also has a nice one similar to the Matrix. If they ever decide to publish their phone number I might start doing business with them. But until then I know another Arfcommer had trouble with them with an issue and could not even find a way to phone them. I've vowed I'll never deal with a company selling high $ items that I have no way to call. |
