Need some input from the knowledge base here.
In the last two 3 gun matches I've had a rifle run perfect all day until it didn't. 5 stages in and suddenly I fire two rounds and double feed, drop the mag, clear the double feed, grab a new mag off the belt, charge, fire one round, double feed....drop the mag, clear, re-insert mag, charge, one round double feed, repeat, switch back to original mag, repeat another DF. Gave up the stage at that point. The first time it happened I tore the rifle down, inspected everything, checked the mags etc, found nothing, Chalked it up to operator error when loading rounds into the mags and not getting everything seated right. put it back together, ran it at the range and life seemed good. Now it's screwed me in two matches and while, knowing me, its probably still operator error I don't know what else to look for and I've lost confidence in it running when the timer is going. I know 99.5% of the time its a mag problem and not a rifle problem but, when it does it, changing mags doesn't seem to make a difference. I've fired hundreds of rounds at home and in practice and never been able to replicate the problem, and like I said, it ran perfect through the first 5 stages. The only other thing I can think of is BCG since that's the only other thing that comes into contact with the rounds but no clue why that would make any difference. The particulars: Gen 3 30 round P-Mags with TTI extensions Rainier Arms forged upper without forward assist Rainier Arms 18" Select stainless barrel in .223 Wylde Forged Lower, milled from 80%. AR-Gold trigger group Rubber City Armory light weight BCG Seekins adjustable gas block Standard weight rifle length spring and buffer thanks in advance for any insights |
| Is it failing to extract the empty casing from the chamber, and then feeding a live round into the back of it? If so that is usually an extractor spring or extractor issue. If it doesn't have the o-ring around the extractor spring try adding one and see if it helps. |

I just had this same malfunction in a new .300 blackout build yesterday. It's a brand new BCG. I checked the extractors on several other bolts and I could barely move them while I could push the one on the new .300 easily with a fingernail. Swapped out bolts from another newer build and it ran everything from 110gr to 208gr without a hitch.
I ordered some new springs, o-rings, and extractor buffers for future. |
| I had a problem like this with my spikes build, it ran perfect with fiocchi then I ran american eagle 55 and 62 and was giving me double feeds, or last round would stick to the bolt face. I called spikes and they sent me a new bolt and it hasn't missed a beat since. it was the nickel boron BCG |

If it's not extracting properly (one live round and one spent case causing the jam), check/replace extractor spring. Add O-ring if needed. If you need an o-ring, PM me your address and I'll drop a couple in the mail to you, no charge.
If it's sending two lives rounds into the chamber, I'd guess it's mag related, namely feed lips. Try some quality brand new USGI mags such as Brownells, NHMTG, or D&H. |

Appreciate the input. In retrospect I can't honestly say with authority whether its a double feed or a failure to extract. In the heat of the moment when the timer is running you're just trying to get the gun running. Naturally at home, without having done anything to the rifle since the problems in the match, it ran like a swiss watch.
It does have the O-ring on the extractor spring and looking at the bolt, everything appears fine. Going to start swapping parts in and out to see if anything makes a difference. Thanks again guys. |
