I put together an AR pistol a few moons ago, and gave it a rustoleum camo job. Unfortunately I didn't bother to test whether or not empty or half full mags will drop free prior to painting it, so I have no "control" to reference. But the painted version is not dropping free. So far I've tried using scotch brite purple scour pads to rub off the paint that got inside the magwell, but its still not enough. Also tried coaing the top of a mag in valve grinding compound and inserting and removing it over and over which seems to have done more wear to the magazine than the lower. I do have a dremel but no polishing wheels or polishing compound.
Anyone got any ideas? its a CMMG forged (I think?) lower & USGI mags, no magpul or anything else |

Chemically strip the paint inside the magwell? It shouldn't hurt the anodizing one bit.
I've got no experience removing rust oleum but I just got done removing both Duracoat (with Jasco's) and Alumahyde II (with citrustrip). Acetone should work well for regular spray paint I would think. CMMG makes quality guns and lowers. I'm betting it's the paint. Remove it and check again. It doesn't take much to make a magwell 'tight'. |

I had a CMMG lower that was out of spec and would not allow magazines to drop free. I tried the mags in other lowers and they dropped, so I eliminated it being the magazine. CMMG replaced my lower. I recall CMMG sold several of out of spec lowers a few years ago. |

Yes, they did have some out of spec lowers go out...I'd still try to remove the paint first and then contact them if you're having issues still though. |
