So I've decided to purchase my first AR15. To be honest, I'm very new at this and I would like some advice!

My idea was to start off with a rifle that is the best of what I can afford ($1,500 range) and go from there. Maybe I will look to build one on my own when I get more comfortable with them and learn more about the platform.

That being said, I've been told Daniel Defense and BCM is a good way to go. But are there other brands out there that would be good to look at too?

The goal for this gun is to have it for home defense, practicing at the range, and starting a well rounded collection of firearms.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

DD and BCM are great rifles.  Pretty darn nice "starter rifle."  lol

The one comment I would make is whatever you do, make sure you have enough funds allocated for a good-great optic  Don't buy a nice rifle then stick a hunk of Taiwanese crap on it.  The cost of that needs to be factored in the intial purchase.

Take a look on Slickguns.com  looks like a couple nice deals running right now.  nice price on a BCM Reece and a Colt LE6920

For a little more than those, theres a really nice deal on an LMT CQB MRP and a Ruger SR-556

Thanks for the feedback!

My plan was to practice with flip up irons for a few months while i save for a red dot. Everything that I've seen online pointed towards a Vortex, EOtech, or Trijicon. Im sure these price points differ wildly but with a few months of saving, I figure I could get one on there.

Good plan. Colt 6920 is an excellent AR starter platform (or the 6720 if you want a lighter bbl), get mags & ammo (and a good basic carbine class if you can swing it) w/the difference while you still can and put a couple of thousand rds through it, then you'll know what it is you really want out of an AR and can go from there.
Decent optics like the Trijicon MRO can be had for as little as $424 shipped w/your choice of factory mount. As previously mentioned, don't skimp on something as important as the optic if this is for possible serious use.
Keep us posted!

Tomac

This started as a stock 6920 appx 2 years ago, now all that's left of the original 6920 is the lower receiver, buffer tube, and a few springs!:

Tomac that looks great!

Thanks again for the advice! I will certainly look into that and update the thread with what I end up with!

+1 on this. Love the Aimpoint.
The EOTech I also liked except for the whole point-of-aim-shifts-based-on-temperature fiasco (sold mine and haven't looked back).
That said I would concentrate on buying a solid rifle first, ammo and magazines second, and practice with irons third. Generations of men became very skilled marksmen basic iron sights. Not saying to avoid optics but I would concentrate on fundamentals first. Save up for the Aimpoint and buy when finances allow. If money isn't a problem then buy the Aimpoint whenever you're ready.
As for the rifle Daniel Defense, BCM, Colt, LMT, and others are top of the line. There are other great rifles but these are companies whose parts I've used and can reccomend from first hand experience.

Colt LE6920 + Sling + Light + Primary Arms 50k Micro Dot

Spend the rest on Mags + Ammo

Whatever you get, do this!!! And as others have said, just save for an Aimpoint. Buy once, cry once. I used to use Eotech but got rid of them. I should have gone with Aimpoint from day one.

I hear that .... Still like the EOtech reticle but mine were quirky, devoured batteries, and did I mention they ate batteries?

Thanks again for all of the advice! After calling around all over the place to different local shops, I finally found the one I wanted and picked it up yesterday. Sorry for the stock photo but I couldn't figure out how to upload a pic from my phone.https://goo.gl/images/eykUro

And apparently that didn't put the photo in either. Anyway, I went with the Daniel defense M4 V7 with the M-LOK rail.
