Nephew bought a AR-556. Gun won't go into battery with live rounds and jams. Have to pry the bolt back with a screwdriver to get it to unjam and eject round. Bolt goes into battery without a round but not with.
Tried steel case ammo in a USGI mag. No Go Tried brass ammo in a USGI mag. No Go Tried brass ammo in a Magpul mag. No Go Tried a Bushmaster BCG that I know works. No Go Does this sound like a jacked up headspace issue or maybe a short chamber? |

There was a thread a while back where someone had the same problem. Ruger claimed they put the wrong barrel on it and replaced it. Aside from ensuring the rifle is clean, properly assembled, and looking in the chamber to make sure there is no obstruction, I would just let Ruger handle it. They will pay shipping both ways and they have a pretty fast turnaround time.
The first thing that comes to mind, if the barrel/chamber isn't bad, is maybe the test fire cartridge failed and left a brass ring in the chamber. |

I checked the chamber for spent bras and found none. I cleaned the chamber with a chamber brush then I stuck a cleaning rod into the bore until I felt it contact the rifling. I did the same on my Bushmaster barrel and the Ruger barrel is about a 1/4" shorter.
Problem appears to be a short chamber. Wrong barrel doesn't seem to be the issue. More like bad barrel. I'll have to wait until Ruger gets my email on Friday and see what they say. |

I had an SR-556 that couldn't fire more than 5 rounds without a jam. The jammed rounds would come out bent and scraped up, and the chamber was full of shaved brass.
I heard Ruger had great support and would take care of me, but I was so frustrated I returned the gun to the dealer so he could deal with it. Ruger lost my business over the ordeal. The gun I had should have never left the factory, and it sounds like your's shouldn't have either. I don't think good customer support is a substitute for good quality control. |

So, I take the gun to a gunsmith and a GO gauge drops right in and he seats the BCG with his fingers. Then he tries a dummy round. Drops right in and he seats the BCG with his finger. WTF?
I go back home drop a 5.56 WWB rd into the chamber and it won't chamber. WTF? I try a 5.56 blank rd and it chambers just fine. WTF? I go through about 15 rds of Wolf steel and pick out the best looking rd. Damn thing drops right into the chamber. I load up a mag and it fires the rd in the chamber and loads another from the mag but it won't chamber all the way. WTF? This repeats another 3 times. Then it fires two rds and jams. I take it all apart, lube the piss out of it till it's dripping oil everywhere. Load up a 30rd mag and it empties the mag. YEAH! but WTF? Load up another mag and it empties the mag rapid fire. YEAH! Apparently the break in period consists of half can of CLP and yelling "YOU FUCKING PIRCE OF SHIT" 35times. Who knew? |
| Mine ran perfect out of the box. My very first round I got a click, but I hadn't seated the magazine all the way, so when I racked the bolt it didn't pick up the first round. After that, it always went bang and I ran three or four different brands of ammo through. But no steel case. |
| I just bought one of the sr556 and chambers and ejects the rounds without issue.I haven't shot it yet although did did clean and lube it once I got it home. Make sure it is lubed well. If not call Ruger or take it back to where you bought it and have them check it out and/or replace it. |
