Thank you for the response. I will be heading over tthere and will post pictures asap. And yes it is a crack, under light you can see speration. At first I thought it was just a heavy long scratch the crack is straight and then cuts a sharp V and continues. Regardless of it being a crack or not assuming the outcome it is a crack such an extreme issue the FFL should service this issue is basically what I'm trying to find out. |

Assumption on my part. You bought the gun new from a gun store/dealer. The gun is new with warranty. The gun will have to go back to the manufacturer. It's another can of worms if the gun was used...or you bought if from someone else and just used the gun dealer as an FFL outlet.
Edit: Ok, I think I just realized the NIB meant "new in box"? My first thought was nickel boron, but I'd never heard of a nickel boron colt...but then...I ain't heard of everything out there. |
| Post a picture so we can see what you're dealing with. I always try to look over a gun in the shop as much as possible before I buy it for that reason. Either way if it is in fact cracked definitely do not shoot it, it needs to go back to colt for warranty work. |
| So no way the FFL will service this issue?? Seems to me that is a raw deal . I could understand if it were a blemish or canted fsb, to contact Colt. We'll every one thank you for input just wanted to see if anyone encounter this sort of problem and how they got the issue fixed. Thank you! |

Regardless of it being a crack or not assuming the outcome it is a crack such an extreme issue the FFL should service this issue is basically what I'm trying to find out. Most FFLs will expect the manufacture to handle any manufacturing and materials defects. They may act as intermediary, as far as shipping is concerned, and if I thought my firearm needed replaced, I would use the original FFL so they (hopefully) wouldn't charge me an additional transfer fee if the gun itself is replaced under warranty. In her case, I would just contact Colt and let them deal with the shipping. Why include a middle man when you don't have to? There are a few FFLs that would just swap it out, and deal with the replacement themselves, but they are far and few in between these days. If I was an FFL, and if the barrel truly is cracked, I would be embarrassed for Colt, and embarrassed that I let it leave my shop that way, so I would deal with it myself. With that being said, I seriously doubt that barrel left the factory cracked. In for pictures. |

If it really IS a crack, (which I doubt) Colt will take care of you, no worries. No company is perfect, Colt puts out a high quality product and if/when they have something miss QC they will take care of you. I had a 6920 and the buffer tube looked like it was chewed up by a rottweiler. Called colt and emailed them photos. They admited that it wasnt pretty but it would pass "military inspection" so it was within spec and not subject to warranty repair/replacement. |

My guess is no crack but a mark but hey, what the hell do I know. As others have said post pictures. I had to re-read the OP: I was starting to think that s/he thought the splitline between the handguards was "the crack", but s/he did say forward of the FSB. |
