Had a fellow bring me an upper he had put in a vice without the block and ended up pinching it.
The bolt carrier is now tight in it to the point it will not function reliably as it drags.
Is there any way to fix it, or is it a lost cause?

The restricted area is right around the ejector port area, and short of damaging it more I can't think of any way to spread it out.
Really doesn't need that much of a tweak to get it working, but I'm afraid to mar it up and make the problem worse.

Its probably a lost cause, but the only thing I can think of would be to stick it in the vise the opposite way and try squeezing it back out. If he squeezed it shut by smashing both sides together, than try sticking it vertical in the vise and see if you can mushroom it back out. This seems really silly, though. I'd just replace it. It'll probably just end up cracking from the pressure of the vise.

BTW, tell your FRIEND not to put an upper in a vise without a block anymore. Not too smart.

Haw, honest, it wasn't me!
I'll try what you suggested, the worse that can happen is its now a paperweight.

Might try a socket on an extension covered in tape to pry it open, but I'm really not thinking it'll work.

Pity is, he lives 5 minutes away and I have been putting whole rifles together for years.

Darn DIY guys with bright ideas and no common sense.
