Just wondering.

The last 3/5 ARs (they were colt, delton, PSA) I've come across and 2/3 lpks have had this problem (cmmg, and Adam arms)

The lgs selling the Colt has no idea how to fix it and was selling it for $600 with it labelled a "fixer upper gun "

You are most likely not going to find a reasonable answer to this question here, or anywhere else on the internet.  You will most likely receive anecdotal information or out-dated experiential answers.

I would contact a manufacturing facility or retailer, but don't get your hopes up.  I cannot imagine a set of conditions where either would volunteer such information to an inquisitive outsider.

OMG...call the MFR and get them to send you a replacement for their defective part (new hammer).  Go buy that $600 Colt and laugh all the way to the bank!  To answer your question, it happens sometimes.  Replace the hammer and drive on.

I've had one missing that spring out of dozens.  The mfg sent me another hammer.  And we all lived happily ever after.

Shouldn't be very common at all.  The manufacturer or the retailer should take care of it ASAP.  Or at least we would.

$600 Colt which is otherwise in good condition?  Just missing a simple spring?  I would guess it was missing more than that, but if not, it was a great price.  Still, I seriously doubt that was the only issue.

Funny, I've made half a dozen ARs and I don't know what a 'j-spring' is?

The wire spring inside the hammer that engages the groove in the hammer pin, preventing the hammer pin from walking

Under $7 and you'll have some spare springs to boot.  http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/ERGO_AR_Lower_Spring_Replacement_Kit_p/ergo-4612.htm

Pardon any ignorance on my end, but I don't think there is a J spring in that spare kit.

J-Sprng = Hammer Spring. It's the largest spring in that kit.

Ummm, No. As stated previously, the J-Spring is a spring that is inserted into the hammer which engages the hammer pin grove to hold the hammer centered on the pin. The manufacturer installs this spring into the hammer. The J-spring is not = to the hammer spring and is not part of a spring kit.

The J Spring is inserted into the hammer, it is not included with many kits for replacement springs, just do a google search for AR 15 J Spring and you will see results that will show those who don't know what the darn thing is!
