Hi, I am a new member and a new AR owner! My name is James, I am 33 and by trade I work in the critical airflow and controls field as a Technical sales Support engineer. I like to tinker on cars, vintage Sears arden tractors, and of course I enjoy guns. I am married with 2 kids, and I live in the (somewhat crappy) state of Massachusetts. My AR-15 is an M&P 15 sport 1 Upper with a 1/9 twist Barrel, standard front Iron sights, an Mbus Magpul rear flip up sight, and standard M&P bolt carrier group. The lower is an Anderson complete AR lower kit, with a fixed buttstock, unknown make 2-stage trigger (although admittedly I can't tell that much difference over a stock M&P sport trigger or a Ruger AR556 trigger) and it has a carbine length buffer and spring in it. I had been wanting one for a while, and this was my buddies 2nd AR that he was using with a .22LR conversion kit, and rarely at that, so I talked him into selling it to me for $425 - I have a M&P 10 rd mag, and (2) 20 rd steel old mags (which I prefer) My plans right now are to get an A2 style stock on it, and a "handle" sight for the rear, maybe a Magpul MOE + grip, and just shoot it :) I just wanted a basic AR15, and I don't want to put too many mods on it, I love the way it shoots right now. Here it is: http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/016_zpsurmmsbmg.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/017_zps8ufowmsb.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/018_zpstge1hfo6.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/019_zpscyhagfix.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/020_zpsoaiukgmk.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/021_zpsi8dsxcf9.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn182/crankymotorsports/022_zpsds6shbv3.jpg Not sure why the images aren't showing up... Trust me, it is a crappy State. |

Welcome to AR's, for better or worse (for your wallet)!
I am a big fan of fixed/solid stocks and have an A2 on my carbine build as well. As someone else mentioned, if you change to an A2 stock you will need to change the receiver extension, spring, and buffer. These can be found in kits that have everything and will pop up on Equipment Exchange every so often. Otherwise, keep an eye out for sales. If you are looking to use ironsights as your primary aiming device, I'd say going to a carry handle, or at least the carry handle sights (LMT style, although RRA and Daniel Defense make good options too). I personally find them to be a bit easier to work with when used as primaries. If you don't get a full carry handle, you'll also be able to add a red dot or small magnified optic with no changes / no new rear. Since you have an MBUS rear already though, I'd keep that as it will allow more flexibility down the road. You got a great deal on a starting rifle. One of the best things to do is shoot it and set it up how you want it. I am a strong proponent of "shoot it before you mod it", which it seems you already have down. |

Thanks for the replies! I was planning on using the "handle" as my primary sight. I really want to get better at aiming with iron sights. Can you guys suggest a decent handle style iron sight for around $50 or less? EBay a USGI Colt handle? Anyone on here have one for sale? I did know about changing the buffer and buffer tube/spring with the A2 stock as well. I'm still debating that though...

I'll apologize up front for introducing you to the but scroll back up to the top and look to the right. Click on the orange button that says Equipment Exchange. I got a great take off Colt carry handle there once. Then the EE started consuming my days and bank account. |
