I am having issues trying to get the bolt to release from the upper and I have no idea who made it.  A little info on the gun  I bought this used at a Cabela's store as a RRA LAR-15.  Well they were only partially correct.  It is a RRA lower but the upper I have no idea.   RRA did say that the lower came with a stock buffered stock.  It's selling point to me is it came with a collapsible skeletal stock and all the accessories I would want on the quad rail. Little did I know that not having the buffer spring would make this a complicated field serviceable gun.  I have had this gun looked at by six dealers who claim to be AR experts and none of them have a clue how to get the bolt out of the upper. The release of the charging handle does not disengage the bolt from the spring. If you haven't figured out by now, it is a gas operated Frankenstein gun.  I would love to know who makes the upper just to get some more history and what the quality of the barrel is. The farthest I have gotten this to break down is the removal of the top picatinny rail via a spring pin to expose the gas tube with the spring. What I cannot accomplish is getting the charging handle and/or bolt to release from the spring as it is under constant tension. It appears that there is a thumb screw at the end of the gas tube that would allow separation of the spring from the tube but it is so tight I cannot get it to turn. I will try to upload pics.  If anybody has an idea of who makes this upper, it would be greatly appreciated and any ideas on how to get the bolt out.

I seem to be having issues uploading pics from an iPad or iPhone as they don't show the location address of the photos.  I could email pics if needed for now. Or perhaps an admin could post them for me through email.

Anyone have an idea on the breakdown steps for removing the bolt on a non buffered, gas operated AR?  This is the same issue. I'll see if I can word it better because I can't get a pic to upload. The top rail of the quad rail has a detent quick release to get access to the gas tube without having to remove the whole quad rail. Push down the detent and slide the top rail forward about an inch and lift it away. Now the gas tube is fully exposed but the charge handle still won't release from the spring. This makes it impossible to get the bolt out as the charging handle will not lock open or release from the spring. There has to be a way to get the bolt out. It almost looks like there is a threaded extension on the muzzle end of the gas tube that you could unthread to get the gas tube to separate from the charging handle spring.  Problem is you can't get a good hold on what's looks like a thumb spin wheel at the muzzle end of the spring and it doesn't turn at all.

Someone must know of a non traditional upper that doesn't release the charging handle and drop the bolt in a traditional manner. There are no YouTube videos and I have stumped 6 gun stores and AR techs with this setup.  It is extremely awkward to try and look at the bolt in a retracted state as you have to hold the charging handle back with one hand while holding the barrel with the other hand and try to see into the action to see what's going one. A 2nd set of hands or a vise seems necessary. It can't be that difficult. There's an obvious over site or it is a unique setup that should known by someone. Please help!  Just trying to do a thorough cleaning and inspection.

Would your upper happen to look like this?

Here is a link on how to post photos here.

Here is a survival blog post on your rifle with pics and very simple instructions on how to take it down for service.

Here is a post here on AR15 that has a lot of information.

ETA: After reading your post more carefully I can only assume your "AR Experts" are idiots who don't know that Google exists.

That is so close, but not quite.  I confirmed with RRA that it was not a complete gun from them.  Very good chance the upper is not theirs. My style has a traditional charging handle. Not the reverse stile like in your pic. The folding stock hinge is exact but I have a skeletal stock. I would say my quad rail is not a tri rail as the top rail is not one solid peice and mounts more like a quad rail.  Just the top rail is removable.

Here are the pic links. This way I didn't have to resize them. Notice the detent nipple about 2 inches left of the screw driver.  That is the release for the top rail. Screw driver is pointing at what looks like a thumb screw extension on the gas tube, but it won't break lose. It is metal and I have tried to use a needle nose pliers to grab it solid so as not to damage. I think your onto the design style.  Anyone else make one similar to RRA-PDS

I'm no expert, but it looks like a Z-M or Para TTR.  See if this helps:

That's it boys.  Thanks so much!!!!  It was a stumper.  Now I just want to find out more about the barrel quality. At least I have a lead to go on now. Thanks again so much. You guys rock!  Happy shooting!
