Yesterday I took my son with me to the range as we were going to test out my first batch of reloads and a little bit of wolf 55gr FmJ.

My son really wanted to shoot first (we only brought 1 AR, my "beater") and the range was absolutely mobbed and I don't like it when its crowded.

He puts the first mag (my reloads) and it does not send a round downrange but I do see it has a light primer strike after he pulls the charging handle to eject this round.

At this point I attribute it to something not right with the reloads and I tell him to take the mag out, clear the chamber and try some wolf and it happens again with the wolf 55gr FMJ., I tell him to clear the AR again as and we'll pack up the AR until we can figure it out and go over to the other side of the range and shoot handguns.

I really wish I had brought a 2nd AR but I really wanted to test out the reloads and let my son have some range time and I didn't want to bring a whole lot of stuff that trip.

So I'm driving the hour and a half back to the house and I am trying to figure out what caused this. What I'm thinking is that it has to be a weak hammer spring.

This sound like a hammer spring problem?

Most likely worn out hammer spring, if not check for the slim chance of debris in the firing pin channel.

Do you have an aftermarket trigger?

Hammer spring installed correctly?
Did this gun work prior to today?
If so how many rounds has it seen with normal function?

Details man, details.

This particular AR was not at any point a factory made. RRA lower with with mix-match LPK of different makers parts. it has worked since 08' or 09' never having a problem before.

Make sure the hammer spring is installed correctly. If it is and nothing else seems out of place replace it and try again.

So I just just swapped trigger and spring from my spare lower and put it in this RRA. This spring I just took from my spare feels pretty strong and I'm going to shit can the old spring.

Hopefully this next weekend I can get back to the range and try this again.
