I need some insight. I just ordered an American Defense Recon-X mount for my AR15. My findings pointed in the direction that if you run your stock close/collapsed or NTCH that the ADM Recon-X is the way to go. I went ahead and ordered that mount but forgot one detail. On duty I use a plate carrier with IV plates (about 1.5 ish inches thick) that the stock sits on when I shoot. I didn't think about the extra length of the plates when shouldering the rifle. Did I just order the wrong mount? Should I have gone with the regular length Recon?
I have a SWFA Classic 1-4x on it's way to use in the mount. Thank you! |

The regular length recon would move it further back...and if you're wearing plates and your stock is already collapsed...you can't collapse it anymore so then there shouldnt be an issue.
If you normally had your stock 2-3 positions out from the receiver, but then collapsed the stock and still ran out of eye relief then it would be an issue- and a bad issue at that because you can't collapse any more than you already have done. ETA: I see what you're saying now, the plates will be pushing it out another 1-1.5" and it's alreay collapsed. My recommendation is to shoot with the stock 1 or 2 clicks/holes out from fully collapsed and still train to shoot NTCH, and then fully collapse the stock with armor on so you achieve the same eye relief. At that point it wont matter on where your stock it, but more so where the scope is on the upper...if that makes sense. If you're not wearing armor and you still shoot with the stock fully collapsed NTCH then either you're a midget or are scrunching your neck backwards...I'm 5'8" and I can shoot NTCH with the stock out 1-2 clicks and then collapse it with LVL IV plates for the same effect. |

Yea, by having the plates on, it's effectively like extending the stock 1 or 2 clicks and pushing the scope farther away from my eye. I have a hard time with NTCH with the plates on for some reason.. Takes practice with plates on, toss your carrier on next time you have time for your departments range and shoot a few hundred rounds with it on a few times a year. As I said above, I would recommend pulling the stock out for normal use and getting used to that while collapsing it for plate use all the while shooting NTCH |

Here is a pic of one of my ARs with the RECON-X... http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/Weapons%202014/008_zps8qkiafft.jpg Thanks for the pics. So that's a Vortex Viper PST on the Recon X rifle right? SWFA says that eye relief is 4.0" for the Vortex. SWFA site says that the SWFA 1-4x (my scope) is 5.0-3.1". Theoretically I should have similar results with my SWFA 1-4x mounted in the same spot as your rifle correct? |

The scope mounted in the RECON is a Primary Arms 1-4x24. Given the eye relief of the SWFA 1-4x, the RECON-X is most likely what you need. The eye relief on my PA 1-4x is 3.5". Eye relief on the VORTEX VIPER PST is 4.0". |
