Ive tried a few brakes on my hunting rifle and just have not been happy with overall performance. I run an 18" Wilson Combat SPR barrel in 5.56. I realize there isnt much recoil with this caliber so that is the least of my worries but I run thermal optics and want to protect them as much as possible. My last brake was a S&J Customs Titan, this is a no no without hearing protection! What is the ABSOLUTE best over all brake for hunting? I want the most recoil reduction and noise directed away from me. Any suggestions?

"To the humble flash hider Uncle Sam calls A2,
I have a few words of appreciation for you.
Hiding flash is what you do best,
You do it as well as all of the rest.
But somewhere along the way what I've found,
You fell out of fashion, just tossed to the ground.
Surefire, AAC, Smith, BCM,
Maybe you’re not as trendy as them.
There’s no “Vortex,” “Battle,” or “Black” in your name,
But you expertly handle the flash just the same.
Proven for decades, worn and abused,
In jungles, mountains and deserts used.
Reporting for duty from sunset to sunrise
You kept many a soldier’s position from compromise.
A classic look that’s always a fit,
You even compensate a bit.
A mount for suppressors with no special collars,
And best of all you’re only eight dollars.
Perhaps the reason I love you the most,
Is the way you just work without any boast.
So thank you A2, for all that you do,
As for me, my ARs will be wearing A2s."

For the money, the A2 does the job. For hunting, I wanted more of the blast to go forward, and chose a BRT for my 6.8 hunting AR build It does throw more sound away from the shooter. So will Levang, STD and the others like that.

Price was higher - and since then I picked up a set of amplified muffs which is a better deal for the dough.

A 5.56 doesn't have much recoil, you can shoot it with the butt against your chin. Brakes were initially meant for big bore guns, worked their way down to the .50BMG, then the .30+ magnums. On a 5.56 about all they do is help improve times in competition. A lot of 3Gunners went that route - all wearing amplified muffs to handle the noise which was much worse on the side ported recoil reducing brakes.

For a hunter the money for a brake is likely better spent toward muffs. I will put another BRT on the AR pistol I built but I can't really say it's more than seeing a fluted flash hider on it for style points. The real advantage is the muffs when hunting. As one user reported, he was hearing a repeated squeaking and realized it was a windmill a quarter mile away. For hunting purposes hearing your quarry is more important - to me - than an incremental change in perceived noise which the muffs are going to moderate anyway.

Big picture the brakes don't do all that and you can come up with other improvement in your total kit that are better and often cheaper than focusing on the gun specifically.

as others have replied, a linear like a LeVang or Troy Claymore makes a significant reduction of noise to the shooter, and directs the blast forward, but not so much in the reduction of recoil...  not near the recoil reduction as my modified Miculek that is on my game rifle...but that is apples and oranges

LeVang on my 10.3" SBR

I run a JP brake on my hunting rifle and also wear a Walkers game ear. It cancels out the brake noise but also amplifies sounds for hunting when you need it. You get the best of both worlds!

This is the feedback Im looking for! My rifle is pretty damn sexy and an A2 would just kill it! LOL I guess if the experts say the A2 is the way to go, ill revisit it. I also hunt with a .50 Beowulf and it has a tank brake. I think this thing must be for show cause it still punishes my shoulder!

I had a "miculec copy" on my AR - I forgot to slap in my earplugs one day - rang my ears something FIERCE. Not to mention you can FEEL the shockwave so much more...uggggg...no thanks.

Screw that. A2 back on, and I like it. The recoil is jack shit anyway so why bother with all the damn noise.
