Official SAM-R and SDM-R photo and discussion thread.....yep we are doing this again. (Page 29 of 29)

This has truly been a crazy journey. I have contacted five different people to help make this SDM-R project come together. If anyone is interested in building one, direct message me, and I will point you in the right direction. Pics will be posted soon. |

The best part is that the barrel is painted black ![]() https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/-/118-520524/?page=792&anc=7401682#i7401690 https://i.imgur.com/ze3gyXJ.jpeg The barrel is blued, just like the other original 99 USMC SAM-R's. This is how all of the SAM-R barrels looked before being heavily used. Only the 5 replacement SAM-R barrels were left in the white. The GWOT war photos make it look like the USMC SAM-R barrels are in the white, but they look this way because of the heavy wear destroying the blued finish on the unprotected areas of the barrel. Even in those war/combat photos, look at the barrel through the vent holes in the KAC handguard, the protected part of the SAM-R barrel inside the handguard will still have it's original blued surface finish. The lower receiver in those photos is an FN M16A2 receiver. The Marines pulled the original A2 uppers off of 100 FN M16A2 rifles, and then they dropped the SAM-R uppers onto the complete M16A2 lowers. All 100 USMC SAM-R's were built using an FN M16A2 lower receiver. There are no exceptions to this rule, they're all built using FN M16A2 lowers. So, don't use Colt, H&R, Hydramatic, etc. marked M16 lowers for your SAM-R clone builds, try to find a correct FN marked receiver for your USMC SAM-R clone. |

It's not exactly correct but I threaded my front sight with 8-36. Thinking that 8-32 was just too common. That's what I get for thinking. kwg |

Mr. Charles Maddux was the Director of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearm Safety (the overseer of the Civilian Marksmanship Program). Post 9-11 he asked what the Board could do to support the Army. I asked for CMP Instructors to augment the Army Marksmanship Unit Service Rifle Team's mobile training teams across the Army teaching Designated Marksman courses. The CMP cast the net wide and funded travel, billets, meals, cars, and per diem for Distinguished Riflemen and national rifle champions at no cost to the Army -- as patriotic pay-back and to fulfill the vision of the NRA and CMP founders to provide expertise in times of war and emergency (The Surge). The Board also provided 40 Armalite DM rifles and ACOGs until we could convert the Army's authorizations from carry handle M16A2s to flat-top M16A4s. These were factory National Match rifles modified with Daniel Defense rails. As National Match rifles the barrels did not come fluted and we did not modify them. We precision-tested each rifle and if they didn't meet USAMU standard we tweaked and re-worked them until they did. Once the Army updated our authorizations we returned the rifles to the CMP. The Armalites were close duplicates to the Army rifles -- just no "Third hole" for the auto sear pin and spring. |

The latch mechanism is annoyingly overcomplicated and fragile compared to basically every other folding sight gas block out there which is where most of the issues with reproduction ones come up. Also, $500 was MSRP for these things, they're around 3-4x that nowadays Originally Posted By thatARMSguy: Originally Posted By RighteousKnights: With the nonexistence stock of KAC folding front sight gas blocks, has anyone pursued a CNC replacement or clone? I've wanted to purchase a CNC machine so I could make parts like this for myself and others if there was enough interest. I've never seen one in person, how exactly does that latch work? It looks like there's a spring in the front sight that pushes down a dowel pin to lock the front sight in the up and down position, and the latch or switch looks like it holds down the dowel pin to keep locked? |

The latch on the front will lock it in either the up or down position. It's not a very strong system, if you drop the gun when the sight's deployed there's a decent chance you'll either snap the locking pin or gouge out the locking recesses and it'll get floppy. Seen a few reports from guys who've used SAM-Rs in the military as well as have those gas blocks on SR-15 uppers. |

I assembled a 20-inch rifle for a young lieutenant to take to Camp Perry. Poverty pony lower, random tube and LWRC stock. Criterion 1-7.7 barrel direct from the factory. Blem BCM clearance upper required heat-fitting. Larue 12.0 rail. Blem Geissele 2-Stage trigger bought on Christmas sale from Primary Arms. ARMS #41 folding front sight and KAC big knob back-up. Random parkerized BCG. 69-grain Sierra Match Kings over 24.5 of Varget, Remington 7 1/2primers in range pick-up Lake City brass. 10-shot function-fire test group shot at 200 yards prone with rifle perched on top of a sandbag -- no sling, glove, or coat. March 4.5X telescope. This is the third group out of this rifle with my old eyeballs: Attached File |

All Marine boots were qualifying with the ACOG by then. The scope is the primary sight so the CMP doesn't care -- you can delete irons if using a scope. In this example it's a back-up (same as the Marine M16A4 and M27). |
