Nice rifle OP! Nice and simple. 'Classic' original looks never go out of fashion. Huge fan of 20" barrels for hunting/range use. What's next? What's next? I may turn this into an M-16A5 clone. If not, then some sort of SBR will b next. Maybe a Mk18 or one of those retro, Vietnam War era SBRs. I'm also into those IDF clone rifles. So many to choose from! So little of my money my wife gives me to buy cool things with! |

Perfect...absolutely perfect. The noobs should pay attention to what makes a shooter instead of a queen. Thanks for the compliment on my rifle! I must say it is tempting to free float the barrel with at least an DCM Free Float tube, but I am going to find out which ammo it likes best and see how it shoots before undo anything else....well, except for the rear BUIS and sling. I feel a rear BUISA is a mandatory thing with a fixed FSB. |

Got tired of waiting for a KAC Free Float RAS to build a SAM-R clone - so I went a direction I think is simplistic, yet will get the job done as well or almost as well as the SAM-R. It started out with a LNIB Rock River Arms LAR-15 with a 20" barrel and....a National Match trigger. I scored it for $750 at a local fun show. I was pleased with the purchase. Next, I farted around reading just about every review of every scope ever made - and settled on the Burris FullField 2 with the Ballisti-Plex reticle, I got new for $179 at Cabelas. I can't say enough about this bare-bones little scope. It is clear as a bell, even when compared against scopes that are 2 or 3 times the costs. It's lightweight and I have it mounted in a similarly lightweight mount from DNZ called the Freedom Reaper. This is all that is going on the rifle - no rails, light, VFG, or bipod. Just bare bones, and simple. It may not be some of ya'lls cup of tea, but I dig it. ETA: I did leave out there is a Magpul Pro MBUS and a MS1 sling on order. Shit. I guess it's not "Done". Well, at least ya'll got to enjoy a pic of one of those oddball 20-Inchers http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r550/jself1976/IMG_1533_zps3ztmglmm.jpg That is a thing of beauty. I'm firmly in the camp of less is more when it comes to AR-15's. Mine is not unlike yours except for the stock and carry handle.

Is an A1 buffer tube required for theA1 stock? I am not sure if the free-floated barrel the DCM tube allows is worth the pound of weight. What do you say? |

Is an A1 buffer tube required for theA1 stock? I am not sure if the free-floated barrel the DCM tube allows is worth the pound of weight. What do you say? Buffer tubes are the same, the A2 stock uses a spacer and a longer stock screw. Here's the thread about shortening the A2. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_12/673229_A2_rifle_stock_shortened_to_A1_length__yes_it_s_possible.html&page=1&anc=6834929#i6834929 The AR pictured above is heavy, near 13 pounds with a full mag and bi pod on it. But it's not a carry around gun so I don't care about the weight. I grew up with heavy target guns so I don't fuss about weight even at my 60 years of age. With that being said...I think it's worth the extra pound. This gun was accurate without the free float, the improvement showed when shooting off of bags or a bi-pod. I'm real happy with it. |

Thank you Munk. The scope on mine is a C16, not as good as the V16 but still decent glass made in Japan. It does the job but I still might replace it with a better one some day. I have one of those lead weights for the stock around here from about 25 years ago, I might try it for balance. But it's about as heavy as I want to go as it is. I do find it easier to hold a heavy gun steady over a light one. Happy Birthday. |
