Thinking of putting together a really nice AR for predator hunting (5.56/.223 w/ either a 16" or 18" or 20" barrel). I have about $2,500 to play with in building this rifle (not counting the scope/mount). Who makes top-notch barrels, uppers/lowers, bolt carrier groups, etc.? A buddy of mine who shoots long range said I should get a matched set - I think barrel/bolt carrier & upper/lower, does this sound right? What manufacturers should I be looking at - Daniel Defense, Noveske, Rainier, Spikes, Wilson Combat, PSA? Any help here is greatly appreciated!

There are a myriad of choices and with your budget you can do just about anything you want to do....and there are a lot of fine barrels out there that deliver predator-hunting accuracy.  I too would buy a barrel/bolt combo so that you know the head-spacing is gtg.

Top of the line are Shilen and Krieger.

Middle of the road (too many to list but some good choices are) Ranier, White Oak Armament, Odin, Wilson Combat, ARP, Black Hole Weaponry, etc.

Under $200 crowd is Faxon, and Green Mountain.

I recently did a SPR-type build and used the Faxon 18", rifle-length gas, mid-weight barrel ($179.95).....and it grouped just below m.o.a. with Federal Gold Match 69 gr. ammo.

I think a complete 16" Noveske fits your bill perfectly.

If weight is an issue (Might be if you are going to pack this thing around) Our matched receiver sets are real nice and tight right now. Hunting was one of the main qualifiers when we built the BALIOS-lite.

Just an option for ya!

i would goto Bravo Company and look at their 18" uppers and put together an SPR that is also used for hunting. My Bravo 18" upper is just fantastic quality and a gorgeous 410 stainless barrel.

With that budget I would go all Noveske.

I put together a fur taker for $1700 with glass. Stag 3g upper and Loupie scope and mount, Geissele SSA. Stag stripped lower. A2 butt. You can pay more, but you won't out shoot me.

With that budget I'd just get a 18" LaRue PredatOBR in 5.56 and call it done.

Really want to build a nice one myself. Just don't know what fits/matches, shoots well, is very good quality, etc… Other than weight & 2/4"diff., what are the pros/cons of 16" vs. 18" vs. 20" barrels? Does fluted cut down on weight much?
