I am wanting to get a lightweight 11.5" upper for a SBR lower I have. Something simple that I will probably only have a small optic like an aimpoint T1, a light, and I will use a Gemtech quickmount muzzel break so I can use my can when I want. Main purpose is for general plinking, light go to gun for homedefense, and something that I plan on using for a carbine class. I want decent quality and reliability but the sky is NOT the limit. I have been looking at BCM, LMT, and Adams arms piston uppers, but all the choices are getting me confused. Was considering magpul SL handguards for the weight, but having to add the adapters for the light and such are their better options?
Things that I am undecided on Gas or piston? A2 front sight post or lowprofie with hanguard over? Handguards-magpul, aluminum lightweight, carbon fiber? Brand? Barrel type? The lower is a spices tactical with a Magpul CTR and Geissele SSA-E. And I will be using a gas buster charging handle since I will be set up for the suppressor. Thanks for the help and any recommendations on build, specs, links, pics, and places to purchase are appreciated. |

With a can going piston will help eliminate the need for the gasbuster CH. It's also less fussy with the lack of dwell time due to short gas lengths (although that length barrel will likely not be an issue).
You also didn't actually mention caliber. If you're thinking you may use it for HD in that size I'd highly recommend the 300 Blackout. Much bigger holes and actually suppresses instead of just "a bit quieter." It also has a much reduced flash since it will actually burn all it's powder in about 9" of barrel, also desirable in an HD scenario. Best part is this would still meet your other criteria, with the one downside being you will have to have a .30 cal can. |

For general plinking 300blk is not the way to go. Waaaaaay to expensive to shoot regularly. .300 Blackout is one of the cheapest rounds to reload if you form it from .223 brass. New factory ammo..........forget it. The limited exposure that I've had with suppressed firearms leaves me unimpressed. Even 9mm is too loud when using 115 grain ammo that's breaking the sound barrier. I didn't tell the people treating me to the experience that I thought they wasted their money, but that's what I thought. Sub-sonic is the only way to go IMO. 147 grain 9mm, 180 grain .40 S&W, .45 ACP or .300 Blackout with heavy bullets traveling around 1000 fps. These rounds don't approach the speed of sound and therefore will not "crack" going down range. |

'one of' and stll not cheaper than reloading .223....that assumes everyone reloads... no question or contest, go .223 |

BCM Standard 11.5" Carbine Barrel, Stripped (NFA) You will want to get a complete (or stripped) upper receiver to complete the upper assembly. You will also want to get a decent set of flip-up sights (MAGPUL MBUS PROs) and a red-dot optic of sort. Also, plan your muzzle device choice around whatever suppressor you are wanting to use. It is important that they are compatible The lower is a spices tactical with a Magpul CTR and Geissele SSA-E. I have THIS ONE
Spikes LW 11.5 CHF My can is in jail so I cannot comment on that, but it is a light, accurate upper. Would buy again. You even have the correct lower, unlike me
