I got the gun bug- runs in the family, but I always thought I was immune.  Guess not.
I have been researching furiously the past month and mostly AR-15s. Thank Google for bringing me here again and again- Thank you guys for being awesome.
Here are the basics-
5.56 20" 1:7 hammer forged machine gun steel barrel, with a carbine collapsable but stock. I have Bushnell 1X4X24mm throwdown pcl, and 3 point sling on order.  I'll probably get a light soon and possibly even change out the hand rails, to add a front grip. I will upgrade the buffer depending on how it functions.  btw, Is putting a complete lower and a barreled  upper considered a build?
I know I didn't go with the popular 16" option,  but I am not going to say never when it comes to using it outside so many yards.  Besides I qualified an M16A2 at 500 yards with iron sights; while longer range shots are less likely and there are better weapons for it, I think the trade off is worth it for me.  I did brake from conventional wisdom at points, and I did it everything on the 80/20 dime.
The why- I want something versatile enough to be effective at longer ranges, while maintaining high levels of functionality in CBC scenarios.  I live in the outskirts of Atlanta suburbs.  Lots of people, but not completely urban.  Lots of trees, lots of cleared land and rolling hills.  Beyond self defense, fun, and small-medium game; my ultimate SHTF scenario takes my family on a little hike to a country neighborhood community where active defense could be well outside of CBC.  Pretty unlikely, but so is me needing to shoot someone.
I am opening myself up to criticism here-  Any must haves I am missing or major blunders?
I did consider a 3-9 scope with a laser pointer for close range and I might do that if I do another (separating and properly matching a 16" upper and an A2 lower to what I have.) Are laser pointers generally effective in a fight or would it be best to right off a traditionally scoped rifle for CQC scenarios.

For self defense and general use there is no need to go an extremely expensive route concerning the rifle. If you want to use optics then use a flat top upper receiver. The optics you use is personal choice although you do not want to use high magnification for CQB. The barrel you mention is plenty good for your purpose. I would buy the basic flat top upper assembly with chrome lined barrel and add a Magpull hand guard to it. The Magpull hand guard will inexpensively allow you to add small sections of rail so you can add a weapon light or vertical grip if desired.  This would be a good general use/self defense rifle for you that with an optic could go longer range when you wanted.
