Please spare me all the usual "they suck" and similar comments.  I'm looking for an AR to introduce my grandkids to rifle shooting. I know they're cheap, but there have to be some OBJECTIVE opinions based on knowledge.

EDIT:  Same request re  DEL-TON

Never tried one. I'm sure they work but they look really cheap and I wouldn't buy one. I'll stick with their shotguns.

When it comes to AR15 styled .22lr's, M&P 15-22 is what you want.

ETA: I just assumed you were in the market for their .22lr AR due to the mention of grandkids.  For a cheap AR I don't see anything wrong with their 5.56 line.

My buddy got a mossberg barrel for under $100. Not a match barrel but no hiccups.  Eats what he feeds it.

I got one of their barrels from AIM awhile back when they were on sale. Had cycling issues right off the bat. It would even hang up just about every time when trying to hand cycle. I didn't have the patience to trouble shoot such a cheap barrel. Swapped for a Spikes 16" and have had no issues since.

I would look at the S&w mp15-22 or a dedicated 22lr upper for an AR. Also may want to look a just a Ruger 10/22 if they are just starting

I have a 10-22 they've been shooting.  I think they're ready for a centerfire, but not mine

Why buy expensive crap when you can buy low priced quality?

You could always thow together a PSA kit for them to have fun with.  Quality is good and the price can't be beat.

i would recommend a PSA or a S&W sport when just looking for something to plink with

A buddy of mine wanted a really cheap ar but didnt want to build so he bought a mossberg. Works just fine

Eta. My dad built an ar using a lot of del ton parts and I'd go that route over mossberg. Both work, but the del ton is much higher quality. Or as said earlier, I'd probably build a psa over either.

Don't know anything about Mossberg, but Del-Ton is fine.

I recently built an AR for my nephew using a 16" Mossberg barrel. He puts it through its paces like any 16 year old would. No complaints.  I've built many Del-Ton barreled uppers as gifts, the last one being a 20". Very please with its performance. Not chrome lined.

Yea it was mentioned in a thread by a couple people.  All I can say is his has never failed.  It may be a hit or miss thing.  I also saw a lot of defenders in that thread.

M&P 15-22 if you want a .22LR, or M&P Sport for a center fire. Great quality to price balance.

Agreed. I've had several Del taco's over the years and they have ran just fine.

I've been shooting one for awhile, It's a great gun for the money (I got mine for $570)

You get a free float rail, good BCG that's properly staked. 1:9 16'' barrel.

I've put a few thousand rounds through mine without a single issue. The only think that's missing is the FA. I honestly don't need one, it's not a combat rifle and never will be.

Introducing the grandkids to shooting id go single shot bolt action .22 or a ruger 10/22 with AR type sights and muzzle break.
