So I have a very nice Spike's tactical 16" carbine that I replaced the compensator with Smith Vortex. Its pretty decent. Only complaint is it sounds like a tuning fork if you strike the end to hard.

I just acquired a Rock River Operator 16" 2 mid length and it has the Rock River compensator. I took it out 2 fire 1 round just to test it. I didn't have any ear protection. I had a wall behind me and one to my left (opposite ejection port). When I fired the round it was so loud I had ringing in my ears. Head hurt for 2 days. Cartridge was fine (didn't explode or malfunction).
Is this normal for the Rock River compensator or is my old ears just not being able to handle that anymore?
I know I know I should have used ears

Anyone else think the Rock River compensator is to loud? Will the Smith Vortex reduce it?

It is loud, it is not just you.

I had a RRA Elite OP2 for a long time, and put several thousand rounds through it.  Smooth shooting rifle, but I am done with compensators.   I actually think the that one is one of the quieter ones, but it is still a teeth rattler if you are a spectator standing off to the side.

I have a buddy with a 16" RRA with their comp on it. He also has a 14.5" POF 308 with POF's comp.

After spotting for him numerous times, I have come to the conclusion that the RRA is louder than the POF.

I have a Rock River TO2 carbine with the RRA tac brake, and the blast is significant when standing to the side.  However, it pales in comparison to one of my 12in AR pistols with a Nordic Components muzzle device.

I can only describe it as punishing.

I had the RRA Tac Comp as well. I haven't had too many comps but it was teeth rattling IMO

Most compensators are louder than any flash suppressor.  You are comparing the smith vortex flash suppressor with a RRA compensator.  A flash suppressor does exactly that, suppress muzzle flash by dispersing the gases released from the end of the barrel but most of the gases and noise is still directed to the front.  A compensator on the other hand is designed to reduce recoil.  Recoil reduction is normally achieved by redirecting the gases against some type of baffle and then out the side of the compensator.  It is this redirection of the gases to the side or top or whatever that increases the perceived noise from behind or to the side of the weapon.  There are some compensators that are designed to direct most of the gas forward like a flash suppressor and still achieve some recoil reduction but I have never tired any of them.

I also have a RRA operator with the operator comp on it and you are correct, its loud.

Awesome. I think I will look for another smith Vortex. Thanks all
