ok so to make a long story short, I sent my 308 barrel back to BHW to be ball fluted ( knights dimple fluted ),  barrel is a bhw barrel, they said the barrel would have to pass an "inspection" before they would flute it.... well the 18" barrel did not pass inspection, I was also going to have the barrel cut and threaded back to 16".  I didn't want a new barrel because when I did the 308 build I had a new bolt head and barrel and I head spaced them... it was a bitch to get the ejector out and now I have to do all that over and check the bolt to the barrel don't I ?

I leave the barrel out of the upper take out the ejector and use a live round 762 and 308 if I can get the bolt to lock on both rounds I am gtg, that's how I did it last time

It's best to use headspace gauges when doing headspace checks. Because headspace is not just a safety check, but it also determines barrel life. Based on SAAMI 308 Winchester Specifications, a brass cartridge can be anywhere in length from 1.627" — 1.634".

As for the headspace dimensions; the minimum headspace is 1.630", and the maximum headspace is 1.640". So, if the rounds used were 1.634" from the bolt-face to the 0.400" datum line, and the bolt closed on the round; the barrel would only have at the minimum 0.006" of headspace left unless the chamber is cut even deeper than the rounds measurement.

When using gauges you check with a gauge measuring 1.630" (Go) and one measuring 1.634" (No-Go) for .308 Winchester; in order to check whether the chamber has at least or more headspace than 1.630", but not enough headspace that equals or is more than 1.634". This is if you are wanting to get the most barrel life.
