How's it going everyone I'm new to the site and pretty new to Ars. I am going to be starting a budget build around 600 to 700 dollars before optics (not really sure which to get). My question is which complete upper should I run for around 350. I can get a brand new PSA 16 upper with a 1/7 twist(as I understand i can't shoot over 55gr ammo?) 4140 barrel, bcg is included. Also a complete Rock River Arms 6.8 spc with 100 rounds (i'm not sure if i wanna pay ammo cost) for 350. Being this is my first build I'm open to anything and any help is greatly appreciated.

lower is not decided yet but andersons are pretty abundent in my area for 65 whats a decent upper around that price thanks!

Stick with a standard upper for your first build (that is don't go 6.8 unless you have a special use in mind).

you can shoot 55gr and over ammo just fine with a 1/7 twist all it will change is how accurate you are with heavier/lighter loads...to most novice AR shooters it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

You've got it backwards, the faster twist rates (1 in 7" vs 1 in 9" for example) are more capable of stabilizing the heavier bullets, 70+ gr. The 1/7" will be able to shoot everything from 55gr up to 80gr or even 90gr. With the faster twist rate, you have the potential to be "less accurate" with 55gr and 62gr surplus ammo, but it's surplus anyway. Accuracy isn't that type of ammo's strong point, and the negative effects of a 1/7" twist rate barrel on a 55gr bullet are almost negligible. You probably won't notice unless you have a 1/7" twist rate upper and 1/9" twist rate upper side by side and you're shooting from a bench.

PSA makes great stuff. For a standard carbine 16" rifle, they're hard to beat as far as price goes. However, I'd get one of their CHF barreled uppers if you go with PSA. Spike's Tactical also makes great uppers, and you could probably put together a complete rifle under $700 from either PSA or Spike's. I wouldn't go for the 6.8 SPC for your first rifle, and most people won't get one even if they really get into ARs.
