My first AR is technically not an AR15 - It's a 1998 Colt Target Match HBAR that I bought new during the Clinton ban. It has the evil flash hider and bayonet lug deleted to comply with the law at the time. Really a nice shooting rifle that languished in the safe for 10+ years while I shot hand guns.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago when I got together with some friends to target shoot. I tried my buddy's Colt 6920 Magpul and it gave me a terrible carbine itch. Being a Maryland resident I thought it wasn't possible, but thanks to our beloved legislature's incredible ineptness I found that HBARs are perfectly legal and obtainable. Damn these things are fun! I put a cheap (Vortex Strike Fire) red dot on the carbine and an even cheaper scope (UTG Bug Buster) on the rifle. The range where I mainly shoot is sit down bench only for rifles, so I changed out both hand guards to Mapul MOEs with a short bottom rail and picked up a Grip-Pod to share between them. The Grip-Pod works great as a bi-pod on either. I haven't shot it yet as a vertical grip on the carbine, but can see how useful it can be. It's mounted too far forward on the rifle to use as a vertical grip. Both rifles shoot and handle quite well, at least for my purposes and I'm pretty satisfied at this point. I'll upgrade the optics in the future. The cheap optics were to test the waters and have proved to work fine. Better stuff can only work better! Having fun shooting both rifles and learning more about this incredible platform. I'm going to have to build 1 at some point, but God only knows what it takes to get a lower in Maryland. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w253/Clump63/AR15/IMG_1765_zps6d62bd62.jpg http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w253/Clump63/AR15/IMG_1766_zps60a5f103.jpg http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w253/Clump63/AR15/IMG_1767_zps3790eedb.jpg |
