CHF, 4150 CMV, 1:8, gain twist, polygonal rifled, melonite, HPT/MPI, 223 wylde chambered, ar15 barrel? and if not, why the heck not....I keep finding these things as features considered desirable for what could be a perfect blend of match and combat barrel......but, it seems only a few of these things can ever be found in one barrel, not even if you separate polygonal / and gain twist rifling, I havent found one barrel with either of those plus all the other qualities. is there some reason why not?

ARP is probably the closest.

You are not going to get the best of both worlds. Durability you loose some accuracy and accuracy you loose barrel life. But ARP barrels are melonited  and extremely accurate.

You either get 1:8 or gain-twist. They are mutually exclusive.

1:8 5r rifling like arp barrels is 1:8 gain twist rifling it starts slower and end 1:8 I understand that means the whole barrel is not 1:8 rifled but as far as the terminology used by manufactures such as arp and smith and wesson gain twist and 1:8 dont seem to be mutually exclusive. I would have to assume the rifling could also be polygonal(not an authority on the matter but it seems feasible) but things like hpt/mpi elude melonite barrel makers, I am not sure but maybe its not necessary on a melonite barrel?

As for accuracy or durability being mutually exclusive it seems to be general consensus that if a match barrel, were also a melonite barrel(which does not affect the original barrel) it should be as accurate as the match barrel unfinished but more durable than a chrome lined barrel. so far all testing I have seen shows this to be true, and I haven't read anything to the contrary. I imagine of course barrels as described would cost a lot, but I don't even see expensive barrels listed with major combinations of the earlier listed traits. any reason my thinking is wrong and a melonite match barrel couldn't be achieved?

and yes as of right now it seems arp is the closest

Pet peeve....

4150 and CMV ate not the same steel.  At all. 4150 does not have vanadium in it. So it is by definition not. CMV.. chrome molly vanadium, named for three of the metals in it's alloy.

Haven't there been questions brought up about Melonite and accuracy?

oh, well, you learn something everyday, every time I see it listed except on colts website it says 4150 CMV, colt list it by its mil contract name I suppose? you know, I havn't found anything about poor accuracy, but also nothing about melonite match barrels, but in theory I have only read what it can do well(which is everything I guess?) but nothing it does wrong, minus the few times I have seen it mentioned that chrome may actually still reign supreme for machine guns. iI anyone has any information as to why melonite shouldn't be the best of both worlds please let me know....(really) because I would like to know if there is reason to look at non melonite barrels.

Chrome adds dimensions to the barrel internally and keeping it a consistent thickness seems to be the issue as for accuracy. CL barrels are fairly cheap and last quite a while. Combat accuracy is also different than what I consider accurate.

Melonite, from what I understand, does not add any internal dimension changes and is hard as hell. I have a cheapo Mossberg barrel that is Melonited and it is quite accurate but it's still not Noveske, Krieger, Shilen etc. accurate.

I reckon that if a quality barrel maker, such as Noveske, starts working on a match grade Melonite treated barrel it will be the best thing since sliced bread. Why they aren't doing yet is anyone's guess. Maybe it has to do with being able to sell more barrels once you shoot out your current match grade stainless steel barrel. IDK.

I have several Noveske barrels and they are lasers with quality ammo. I'm getting pretty close to holding 4 inches at 300 yards with shitty XP193.

Now the cost of replacing a barrel versus the cost of ammunition to shoot it out makes replacing the barrel seem fairly inexpensive. However, I would love to find a barrel with the same accuracy potential that would last forever.

I have yet to try an ARP but it's on my list of things to do. Until I see evidence that a Melonite treated barrel is capable of shooting with a match grade barrel, I will continue to use stainless steel.

hydra, your response pretty much sums up everything I have read.....but, when people already pay what they do, and get what they get when purchasing a match grade barrel....why should the companies mix it up now.  its a shame to know there could be a better way....but not be able to do anything about it...oh well, nothing is perfect I suppose. If I were a smarter person I would figure out how to get into the biz myself....and make said dream barrel....or maybe fail horribly(probably more likely) trying to. noveske must be one of the proudest people in firearms. never heard anything more highly spoken of in my life. anyway....I guess it's just a matter of whats out there and making it work to my advantage, ah but what a world if we could just want something and it would be so.....time to win the lottery? yes, always.
