I have purchased a unturned .257 barrel for a 25-223 project.  This will be my first wildcard and my first custom AR barrel.  I have several questions about finishing the barrel:

1.  How do i measure where to drill the gas port for a rifle length gas system?  Do i measure from the breach or from the muzzle?  If from the breach do i measure from the end of the barrel extension?  What would the measurement be for a rifle length gas system?

2.  What size hole do i drill for the gas port?

3.  Whats the proper way to headspace an ar?

4.  For drilling the gas port, do i have to worry about if i drill between on the lands, on the groove, or in between?

Thanks for the help!

Might want to try asking in the Build It Yourself section.

you're searching for a lot of info........and I'm at work, not home..........but for a couple Q's....
you're going to measure from the breach end for the gas port.
very hard to say what size port with you going to a 25 cal.  Lots of factors come into play..........even with .223 the gas ports can vary significantly depending on barrel length......but I'd start small and go up. Much depends on buffer and spring too.
I'd have to be at home to measure, but "think" ports to be about .048-.050.....
I never worry about drilling between/on lands or grooves..........in my experience it hasn't made any difference, but mine is just anecedotal evidence. I know Kreiger used to hit between the lands on their Highpower barrels but don;t kjnow if they still do or not. I don't know how you would do it consistently, when you have to get the tenon turned/threaded to fit the barrel extension, and then at the same time figure out where the groove is going to be at a certain distance from the extension.etc..........I don;t worry about it.

Thanks for the info.  If you get home and have the measurements for how far from the breach to drill the gas port that would be great.  I assume you thread for your barrel extension, install to line up gas port, then take off and measure?  or do you measure with the barrel extension in place?  That info seems to be hard to find for some reason.

You seem to have the steps wrong.

The barrel is threaded for an extension first, chamber cut then the extension is torqued to spec and pinned at tdc in reference to the feed ramps. Lastly Gas port is drilled in reference to the pin.
