Hi Group...

I somehow ended up with a new style AR this weekend.  Ive had a few AR's in the past...always SP-1's and HBAR A2's.  never wanted to have two uppers, but my new one is 300BLK.  So my guestion is...can i buy a complete .223 upper and basically have two rifles.  If so, do I need a complete upper AND carrier/bolt......OR do I use my current carrier/bolt in the new .223 upper?  Heres the specific's if it makes a difference...

BCM4 lower, carrier/bolt (I think bolt...stamped BCM on carrier)
Vltor MUR upper, Midwest quadrail, CMMG 300BLK barrel 16", Vortex PST

what I want to also have is a .223 16" A2 upper...what I don't know is are the carrier/bolt MATED to the upper/barrel?

thanks!

Just a .223 or 5.56 upper.

The carrier/bolt are the same.
They are not mated.

ETA: They can give you a bolt that is "mated" to a barrel..but it will still run with whatever you put it with.  You will be fine just buying a regular upper and utilizing the BCG you have.

It is a recomended practice to check headspace when combining a different barrel & bolt of unknown origins. Typicaly it is not a problem, but it should be checked.

There are several head space guages available at a reasonable price.

If you DIY your own upper, simply by a Barrel and BCG together & use them for that upper. Cost of a new BCG is around &100-150.  Or get a Upper with BCG. This way you have the right componenets together if you ever pick up another lower (and you will ), and don't have to scrounge for one later on.
