I just bought a new barrel. First thing I always do is waste a couple hundred rounds before I start shooting for groups. Not necessarily because I should but more because I can't help myself. I get off on shooting clay at 100.
My question is on this build I got myself one of those fancy SLR adjustable gas blocks. I will be putting the rifle in a bench vise for the testing. Would it be helpful to turn the gas off? I plan to do it both ways eventually but im a little short on ammo and would like to get the fastest most accurate data up front. I am very curious as well to feel exactly how much actual recoil an ar has when the action is not part of the equation.

I have two rifles with those blocks . A guy at the range told me the same thing as I was tuning the gas block, If I turned off the gas, he wondered if it would make the weapon more accurate  (like a Bolt Gun) I would be interested to know if this works. I was going to try it but i was limited on time & I didn't want to mess with the settings after having just tuned it. Plus I cant imagine the circumstance where I would shut off the gas anyway. Neat experiment though.

As far recoil goes, i dont imagine it would be more than a bolt action 223... and that aint much

I never shot bolt action guns other than a 22 250.

Real world application really has nothing to do with my inquery. Its more just personal curiosity. I think between my brake/comp and the gas block recoil should be minimal at best. Which is good because I built it this way to race with my friends.
