I have been trying to find a 20 inch barrel for an A5 clone.
My question is all I see for .gov profile barrels are heavy barrels. In my last builds a few years back .Gov profile was the H-Bar. Heavy barrels are common, the H-Bar looks rare. Did "they" change the .Gov profile? |

HERE
Top notch barrel. High standard makes good 20" govt profile barrels. |

Yep, those are types of barrels I am going to get.
My first build on this project had the rifle alone at 12.5 pounds with no mag. I was looking to reduce weight. My secondary question was which barrel was the .Gov issue profile? The heavy or the H-Bar? I always thought it was the H-Bar after the A1 - or am I wrong? |

All the m16s a2 and after are government profile which is lightweight under the handguards and heavy profile after the gas block. Everything before a2 was lightweight before and after the gas block. When they were developing the a2 they originally designed them to be a heavy profile through the entire barrel but they made them change it to lightweight under the handguards to make them compatible with the grenade launchers that were already in service. The cutouts on the m4 profile barrel are there for the same reason. |

You'll definitely enjoy have a gov't profile barrel over an hbar profile. I re-barreled an A2 upper for my brother, and the heavy barrel by itself weighed more than the gov't barrel and upper receiver combined. Think that is bad I have a RRA NM 20" upper it is bull under the handguard and H-Bar after the gas block. It is a nail driver though! |

That's about what the barrel I removed was like. .750 at the gas fsb, steps up to a larger diameter for 3 inches, then the rest is bull barrel. I shaved the fsb and plan to use it in a precision rifle build. |

Just because the Gov or military uses a specific profile does not make it the best. Typically a thicker barrel will be more consistent and accurate.
There are several barrel makers out there with SOCOM barrel profile (most are not). If your are trying to go light the Gov (thin under fore arm) is the way for you to go. Want better accuracy longer get a thicker barrel (Hbar). I like the socom profile I got from AR precision. Not as thick at a socom M4 but is shoots really well and not such a pig to swing onto other targets. Quote used in military: "Remember; this stuff is made by the cheapest bidder" |
