| I am looking at uppers and I have usually only dealt with m4 uppers, thats because I have no clue what midlenths are. what are they? |
|
As others have said, middy is between carbine and rifle. I like mid for 3 reasons :
1. longer sight radius = potential better accuracy 2. softer/ smoother recoil impulse - my perception-nothing scientific. 3. On a 16" bbl, I think they look better - and Im not a fan of R4 cuts Theoretically it is said that carbine is more reliable because of the higher pressures at the gas block. In a really dirty rifle that may be the case, however, Ive had carbine, mid, inter-mid and rifle, all go down at inconvenient time. All had experienced high round count and other factors(rain, dust, low power ammo, bad mags, etc) when it happened. |

As a rule of thumb, not an exact measurement. An M4 runs a carbine length gas system. It is about 7" from the upper receiver to the front sight base. ABOUT A mid length gas system is about 9" from the upper to the front sight base. A rifle length gas system is about 12" from the upper to the front sight base. Please do a search on this topic as it comes up often and there are multiple threads on it, it is also covered in the FAQ. Here is a 14.5" mid length, light weight barrel. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2558/5830990028_f7823ea56d_b.jpg 14.5" carbine - M4 profile barrel. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8263/8644238960_e15106f886_b.jpg Thank you, I plan on not using a front sight post, but I like the mid. Since I have 3 I will build 1 mid, 1 carbine, and 1 pistol just for fun |

There are some good 14.5 mids out there; Rainier, BCM, DD, Spikes, Noveske... Quoted:

I already know I want a 14.5, I know how I want it to look I am just not sure about where to get the right parts from. This man speaks the truth. Mid-lengths are awesome. I'll never own another rifle length gas system again. For that fact, I'll never own another barrel longer than 14.7 inches again either. |

So Stag is about the only popular manufacturer not offering mids? It appears looking at their site all are short systems. Quoted:

I don't think Colt offers them either. |

The difference to most is a perceived softer recoil impulse. In my rifles, they do feel a bit smoother.

Check out the high def ar photo thread the thread I posted in the Rainier forum. I'll try to get some up later tonight when I get home from work if you haven't found em by then. As for the gas system, it gives (IMO) a smoother and softer shooting rifle. Supposed to be easier on the internals, but considering pretty much all my rifles of late have been mids, I can't compare. Plus I like the look of a 14.5 with the mid gas. Just looks more balanced to me. |
