I just completed my second build which is running a BCM 14.5" LW middy, auto carrier, and carbine buffer. It's the smoothest shooting AR that I've ever shot. My other rifle is running a RRA 16" LW middy, enhanced carrier, with carbine buffer and has a noticeably harsher recoil impulse.
I know the carrier weights play a part in how smooth a rifle feels, along with barrel length, gas systems, and buffer weights. My question is, would going to a heavier buffer help smooth out the 16" middy to be more like the 14.5" middy? |

An H or even H2 will make a noticeable difference. The RRA is probably a bit overgassed. My FN 16" mid is butter, even with a carbine buffer. I did swap in a Sprinco White, and an H and it is really flat! I tested the new Spikes D2 comp on it today, and it is like a damn .22 with that. You might try a Sprinco Blue, too |
