I have a Colt Sporter II, pre ban. Since my ownership I have only put 100 rounds or so through it. I am now back at it, trying to egt more time in at the range and I would also like to start making modifications to the ar. However after reading up a bit on it, it seems the pre bans are worth a bit more money to the right buyer.

My plans are for a flat top receiver, free float hand guards, adjustable stock, angled grip and optics. Pretty much changing everything but the lower receiver, trigger, barrel, and bolt. But witht hose modifications is it even worth doing? Or would I be better off selling the colt, and buying another ar that already has what I am wanting? Bans don't affect me, so I have no need for "pre ban".

Pre bans were worth a lot more before the libtards went on a banning surge, now you might be out of luck.......a lot of the new laws had to have the lower registered in a ban state by a certain date

Is yours a rifle or carbine?

I used to have both, bought my new rifle when they first was released in 1984 and my carbine when first available in 1985 both runs flawless without any problems, I had at least around 10K to 15K rounds then got new model Sporter Target rifle and Sporter Lightwweight carbine in '91.

I would suggest selling it to states with ban but allows pre ban weapons because it would be worth more there.

When you buy the new AR that you want either buy it already close to what you prefer or build it exactly the way you want it.

You could get appraisals from the Retro forum, here's the thread link below.

It is still a semi-vintage Colt.  Probably more of it's value will be based on that rather than it's ban status at this point.

I wouldn't go modifying it if I were you.   Keep it as stock as possible and it'll be worth good money to the right buyer if you want to spin it off.

Build yourself an AR to your specs if you're jonesing for something different.

.....from a previous Sporter II owner who sold his off and regretted it.

if you are going to replace everything on the upper you might as well just buy/build a whole new upper.

I wouldnt think twice about one of the ptac uppers

don't sell it or modify it. Save up to build another rifle, they are very cheap to build right now

Not to derail, but prebans are now the ONLY AR-15 we can buy in CT.

So GTG for us.  For now at least.

Most of the Sporter 2's with the grey finish had a larger front take down pin.

If You buy a regular flat top upper it might not work without an adapter pin.

I vote for keep it stock and build another rifle.
