It's a sun shade.

Quoted:
A 4" Sun Shade only weighs a couple of ounces. http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/Eric300_photos/Guns/r15002-1.jpg looks beast bro, how far out does that thing touch accurately? did you build it? and what size barrel? |

I think the shade on my 6-24x50mm target Pentax (Burris Black Diamond) is only two ounces, maybe even a bit less. This is very thin anodized aluminum. Its only purpose is to keep sunlight from reflecting onto or off of the objective lens, so it can be very thin and light. The scope, on the other hand, as with most long range target scopes, is pretty darned heavy, I think about 24 oz. for mine. So about 2 oz.more is insignificant and does not change the balance of the rifle at all. |

The extended shade is important for two reasons - to block sunlight from hitting the lens, for a better view, and to prevent a glare coming off the lens that might be visible from the direction of the target which could invite unwanted return fire from said targets. :) |
