I've google'd and searched and haven't come up with an answer because i don't know what its called.

what do those front 3" attachments do to a rifle scope? For example here is a TRS-1

But this is also a TRS-1....

Whats the point? why is it so big? what does it do? and does it have a name? Is it just a killflash?  I'm new to magnified optics and am thinking about building a SPR in the future.

They are sun shades. They keep the glare out of the optic. If you have ever looked through your scope early in the morning or as the sun is going down, in the direction of the sun, you would quickly see the benifits.

It's a sun shade.

cheers, thanks. Yeah the only magnified scope I've touched is an acog for a few days, but I haven't had that it needed that. Is it heavy?

A 4" Sun Shade only weighs a couple of ounces.

Yes.  I think the shade on my 6-24x50mm target Pentax (Burris Black Diamond) is only two ounces, maybe even a bit less.  This is very thin anodized aluminum.  Its only purpose is to keep sunlight from reflecting onto or off of the objective lens, so it can be very thin and light.  The scope, on the other hand, as with most long range target scopes, is pretty darned heavy, I think about 24 oz. for mine.  So  about 2 oz.more is insignificant and does not change the balance of the rifle at all.

Thanks. Bone stock Remington R-15 VTR .223/5.56 (other than the Timney trigger, ERGO grip, and BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 CH). 22" fluted 1/9 tapered barrel (heavy under the hand guard). Shoots sub MOA with 55 gr. V-Max and drops coyotes all day long at 300 +/- yards. Not only does the sun shade help with eliminating reflection, but it also will keep the objective lens protected from elements such as rain and/or snow.

This is why the front end of the scope gets big - big lens. The extended shade is important for two reasons - to block sunlight from hitting the lens, for a better view, and to prevent a glare coming off the lens that might be visible from the direction of the target which could invite unwanted return fire from said targets. :)
